A corporation that is financed by insurance premiums and has member physicians and professional staff who provide curative and preventive medicine within certain financial, in Southern California, with enrollment of 3.1 million, more than twice that of No. 2 Blue Cross of California. Kaiser's growth in enrollment came both in Southern California and company wide. It added 48,000 enrollees, or 1.6 percent, to its Southern California commercial membership. Companywide, Kaiser added 5.8 percent, or 347,000, to reach 6.3 million commercial members. Oakland-based Kaiser grew out of industrial health care programs for workers at the Kaiser companies during the 1930s and '40s, with enrollment opened to the public in 1945.
