EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

THE commercial membership rolls of the 10 largest health maintenance organizations operating in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  came in just below 8.1 million. Except for No. 9 Universal Care, commercial enrollment decreased by 3.7 percent from the year previous. In L.A. County, commercial enrollment fell 5.6 percent for the like period.

KAISER FOUNDATION HEALTH PLAN INC.

DESPITE a small decline in enrollment, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan Inc. still leads the pack, accounting for more than a third of the aggregate enrollment on the list.

Kaiser reported slightly less than 3.1 million Southern California commercial enrollees, down 73,000, or 2.3 percent, from the year before. Companywide, the Oakland-based non-profit saw similar losses, shedding 115,000 members or 1.8 percent, for a total of 6.2 million members.

 Kaiser Permanente Kaiser Permanente is an integrated managed care organization, based in Oakland, California, founded in 1945 by industrialist Henry J. Kaiser and physician Sidney R. Garfield.  Los Angeles Medical Center on Sunset Boulevard Sunset Boulevard is a street in the western part of Los Angeles County, California, that stretches from Figueroa Street in downtown Los Angeles to the Pacific Coast Highway at the Pacific Ocean in the Pacific Palisades.  and the Kaiser Permanente Panorama City Medical Center.

The Los Angeles Medical Center, where Kaiser does its most sophisticated procedures for Southern California, is scheduled to open in 2006 with 456 beds. The project has a price tag of $428 million.

The Panorama City rebuild, costing $267 million, broke ground last fall, with an anticipated completion in 2007. The new facility will have 218 beds.

Opened in 1945, the health plan grew out of industrial health care programs for workers at the Kaiser companies during the 1930s and '40s. It now operates in nine states and the District of Columbia District of Columbia, federal district (2000 pop. 572,059, a 5.7% decrease in population since the 1990 census), 69 sq mi (179 sq km), on the east bank of the Potomac River, coextensive with the city of Washington, D.C. (the capital of the United States). , using an integrated group model to deliver health care throughout its regional networks.

Kaiser reported net income of $235 million for the third quarter ended Oct. 31, up from $137 million in the like year-earlier quarter. Third quarter revenues were $6.4 billion vs. $5.6 billion in the third quarter of 2002.
