Health impacts. (Technical Briefs).

Potential infectious risks include the spread of sometimes resistant microorganisms from health care establishments into the environment. These risks have so far been poorly investigated. Wastes and by-products also can cause injuries.

Sharps

Throughout the world, an estimated 12 billion injections are administered every year. Not all needles and syringes are properly disposed of, so sharps pose a considerable risk for injury and infection, through accident as well as reuse.

Radioactive Wastes

The public is occasionally exposed to radioactive waste, usually originating from radiotherapy treatments, that has not been properly disposed of. Serious accidents have been documented: In Goiania, Brazil, four people died in 1988 from acute radiation syndrome radiation syndrome Any condition induced by radiation Examples Radiation arthropathy, radiation carditis, radiation cytitis, radiation dermatitis, radiation enteropathy, radiation fibrosis, radiation hepatitis, radiation nephritis, radiation pneumonitis. , and 28 suffered serious radiation burns. Similar accidents happened in Mexico City in 1962, in Algeria in 1978, in Morocco in 1983, and in Ciudad Juarez in Mexico in 1983.

Blood Wastes and Chemicals

Risks from these wastes have been relatively poorly assessed and need to be investigated.
