Healing for Those Hurt by Love.

Author Michelle McKinney-Hammond considers her readership her ministry

, Michelle McKinney-Hammond, is beautiful, accomplished and with a provocative full-lipped smile beneath a pair of penetrating eyes. Now, why has this woman written almost a dozen "how to get a man" books?

That was the first question posed when I called Michelle at her Chicago home hoping to shed some light on my editor's query on how the market bears so many books from the same author on the same subject. (See "Earthly Love for Christian Women" for a selection of her books.)

The voice on the other end was earthy earth·y

and a lot of bubble. When I told her I found it hard to believe she could possibly be going through the same junk I was going through, a delicious laugh erupted from the other end. "That's hilarious," she said. I liked this woman instantly! I looked at my notes, and tossed them aside thinking "Girlfriend, let's talk" And that's what we did.

On the issue of how come she's still single she answered directly: "I made so many mistakes, I made a decision not to get involved until I was healed. I understood that we attract who we are." She found herself wondering,"What's so hard about taking a hiatus hiatus /hi·a·tus/ (hi-a´tus) [L.] an opening, gap, or cleft.hia´tal

 from men?"

I'm thinking, "Let me count the ways," but I keep a grip. We are all in the man problem thang. I'm telling her my woes and she's right there "Mmm-hmm, I know what you mean ..." with a difference, a big difference: this woman exudes caring and devotion to her faith. Every word, every giggle, every "puhleeze" affirms her love for God.

After some laughs, Michelle told me that once she had decided to take a hiatus for healing, she went to the bookstore to get singles books. She was not satisfied with what she found and said to herself, "I'm gonna' write a book I'd like to read." One book led to the next and to the next because Michelle found a need, a ministry, her "calling." "I have a loyal readership. It keeps fueling more and more. My fear is will I have time to tell everyone everything I am."

Michelle personally answers all of her mail. She tours the country as guest speaker for numerous conferences and retreats. "It's really an incredible privilege to work with people" Michelle comments. She recalls an experience of having received a coveted cov·et

of a love lost, in a letter from a woman who wanted to thank Michelle for helping bring her to the point where she could finally let go of this keepsake the man had given her. The note brought tears to my eyes and the sentiment was heartfelt. Remember Rose, from the movie Titanic, tossing the blue diamond back into the ocean after 70 years? That kind of relin-quishing turned into a gift instead. "I'm a caregiver. Very driven by these books (her work) ... very protective of people. I see women hurting. I love my sisters.... Such a mix of all things wonderful and terrible. It drives me to write more."

She is not rushing the Mrs. because she wants "to get these other books out first."
