Heads up! companies don their thinking caps to improve football helmets. (Facility Focus).

Helmet companies such as Schutt Sports, Riddell, Adams USA, and Bike (which was purchased by Adams in 2001) are doing their utmost to protect against mild head traumas. Over the past three decades, helmet-testing research has been conducted under the auspices of the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE NOCSAE National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment ), a non-profit organization A non-profit organization (abbreviated "NPO", also "non-profit" or "not-for-profit") is a legally constituted organization whose primary objective is to support or to actively engage in activities of public or private interest without any commercial or monetary profit purposes. , However, due to limited scientific data, the standards do not address concussions.

There seems to be a difference of opinion on the potential areas of concussions. Some companies believe that they occur below the jaw line. However, a two-year study by Ottawa-based Biokinetics and Associates Ltd., (partially funded by the NFL NFL

specialists from several universities, concluded that concussions are caused by hits to the upper jaw and side of the head.

Using the football field as a laboratory, Biokinetics viewed multiple video recordings of head collisions in professional football players that were analyzed to determine the details of motion and contact. Twelve incidents were studied involving 24 players, of whom 10 were concussed.

These head impacts were replicated in the test lab using instrumented, helmeted crash-test dummies. The impact forces to each head were measured and the outcome presented in the form of an index on impact severity.

The bottom line is: What may cause a concussion with one player may not necessarily do so with another.

and easily removing the helmet, it probably means it's too loose, Moral: Both coaches and players alike must see that each and every helmet is properly fitted. Customized, if you will.

Although helmet shells appear to be the major focus in the purchase of a helmet, you cannot overlook the significance of the helmet's infrastructure. Inflatable air liners, EVA Eva

You can look at it much as you would the peace of mind afforded by the airbag in an automobile.

Other features such as jaw pads, faceguard straps, and chin straps work in conjunction with interior liners to keep the helmet secure.

"We offer a lot of options when it comes to internal components," says Julie Nimmons, a former Chairperson for the SGMA SGMA Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association
SGMA Southern Gospel Music Association

. "All of these options provide a customized fit. Will all of this eliminate the potential for concussions? No, there is always a potential."

Schutt prides itself on staying ahead of the curve when it comes to safety for its entire line, including the latest Air Varsity Commander. From its GE Lexan polycarbonate A category of plastic materials used to make a myriad of products, including CDs and CD-ROMs.  alloy shell, to its Air liner technology, to its tapered front sizers, to its facemasks (titanium, stainless steel stainless steel: see steel.

Helmet design is also helping to alleviate, if not shield, jarring blows.

Riddell's Revolution, which is larger than conventional helmets and extends further along the jaw line, has a Kra-Lite II Polycarbonate Lexan shell material that makes it lighter without sacrificing protective qualities. The company has also introduced what it calls SSS SSS

Schutt, on the other hand, has not changed the shape of its helmets in 15 years.

We've changed some padding inside the helmet," Nimmons says. "We've changed the air liner. We've changed other things. But the helmet shell has stood the test of time. You've got to make a product that is going to be affordable and accessible to everyone."
