Head of Sweden intelligence dies at 61Klas Bergenstrand, the head of Sweden's intelligence agency, died Monday from an apparent heart attack. He was 61. Bergenstrand became ill overnight and was taken to St. Goran's Hospital in Stockholm where he was pronounced dead, the security police, or SAPO, said in a brief statement. Assistant Director Kurt Malmstrom took over Bergenstrand's duties pending a permanent replacement, SAPO spokesman Jakob Larsson said. Bergenstrand had led the agency since 2004, after serving as the country's chief prosecutor for a decade. He also held several positions at the Justice Department for more than 10 years, and served as interim head of the national police in 1991-92. As chief prosecutor, Bergenstrand led a massive reorganization to modernize and centralize Sweden's entire prosecution authority. He started a similar reorganization at SAPO, putting more focus on anti-terrorism efforts. "His passing is a great loss to the entire judicial system," said Justice Minister Beatrice Ask. "Klas combined skill with enthusiasm, modesty and unlimited energy. The inspiration he gave people in his surroundings will live on for a long time." He is survived by his wife, Christina, and two children.
