CENTER CITY, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 2, 2000

The Hazelden Foundation announced today that it has been invited to do a signal poster presentation at the 11th World Conference on Tobacco or Health, which will be held in Chicago from August 6 - 11, 2000.

Entitled "Clinical Smoking Cessation Applications In The Recovery Community," the poster addresses the need for a tobacco cessation component in treatment plans in the recovery community, citing the high instance (90%) of tobacco use among recovering chemical dependant adults, and offers a modified 12-step model as an important opportunity to effect institutional change. Tobacco cessation has historically been absent from treatment plans in the recovery community. Research efforts and evidence-based resources have been slow to permeate the practices within the treatment sector. In 1999, in response to these circumstances, Hazelden developed a community based cessation program. Substance abuse counselors were recruited for project participation. This program was based on current review of literature and research pertinent to tobacco use, cessation and addiction, and implemented recommendations for cessation group support programs as identified by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC See Control Data, century date change and Back Orifice.

Hazelden's tobacco cessation treatment, incorporating a modified 12-step model, which can be augmented with pharmaceutical methods, in adherence to the AHCPR Clinical Practice Guidelines clinical practice guidelines Clinical policies, practice guidelines, practice parameters, practice policies Medtalk Systematically developed statements to assist practitioner and Pt decisions about appropriate health care for specific clinical circumstances. See Psychology.  for Smoking Cessation, represents an important opportunity to improve the quality of tobacco treatment/cessation services within the recovery community. Their comprehensive tobacco control plan includes identification and treatment of tobacco use. Certified counselors provide tobacco cessation information and programming as a standard of care with their clients, representing an opportunity to impact the high prevalence rates within the recovery community. The overall goal is to effect institutional change within the substance abuse counselor community that promotes tobacco cessation efforts.

What impact does Hazelden hope this poster and its tobacco cessation training and program development have? "The World Health Organization already predicts a global pandemic resulting from tobacco use. We have both an opportunity, and a significant responsibility, to look toward the future," says Hazelden's Barry McMillen. According to McMillen, Hazelden is currently expanding it's program scope to include facilitator training, and an outpatient models for community and work settings. Professionals should note that Hazelden's tobacco cessation programs are certificated.
