Having lost the battle for "comprehensive" immigration reform, Sen. Dick Durbin and like-minded colleagues are now trying for amnesty on the installment plan. Durbin, the number-two Democrat in the Senate, wants to give citizenship to people who entered the country illegally before age 16 and who have completed two years of college or service in the military. In turn, these legalized aliens would be able to sponsor their parents for citizenship. Illegal immigrants, present and future, would be eligible for discounted in-state tuition rates. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, meanwhile, is promoting legislation to grant amnesty to illegal agricultural workers, their spouses, and their children. Both measures enjoy bipartisan support. Heeding the public demand to crack down on illegal immigration is a job Washington politicians won't do.
