JS Forty women scientists, ranging from Madame Curie Curie (kürē`), family of French scientists. Pierre Curie, 1859–1906, scientist, and his wife, Marie Sklodowska Curie, 1867–1934, chemist and physicist, b. in 1902 to Cindy Lee Van Dover in 2001, are included in this book aimed at the 4th to 9th grader, though many older readers will find the material fascinating. While the stories are about women scientists, the author focuses on "the process of science": what it feels and looks like while it is being done. In addition to the fascinating stories, each only a few pages long, the author includes lists, some chronological chron·o·log·i·cal also chron·o·log·ic adj. 1. Arranged in order of time of occurrence. 2. Relating to or in accordance with chronology. , some by field of study, and an excellent index that make the book easy to use. Each story is followed by suggested topics for further consideration and readings and a section called "After Words," which comments on some aspect of the story. In one case, the author notes that the woman scientist was never given credit for her discovery of pulsars when her mentor received the Nobel Prize Nobel Prize, award given for outstanding achievement in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, peace, or literature.
