Havana Central buys restaurant space at 2911 Broadway.

Newmark Knight Frank Retail has arranged the sale of the restaurant space at 2911 Broadway, which has been home to long-time Columbia University staple, The West End.

Havana Central, a Cuban-themed restaurant chain, will now occupy the space.

Located between 113th and 114th Streets, the space consists of 4,600 s/f on the ground floor, a 2,800 s/f basement and catering room, plus a 600 s/f outdoor card area.

Stu Morden, managing director, and Ross Kaplan, associate, at Newmark Knight Frank, represented

The West End, while Jason Pennington of Butler Kane represented Havana Central. "The West End has been a favorite among the neighboring Columbia University students for generations, becoming an institution among its patrons," said Morden.

"Havana Central, which has two other New York City locations, plans to keep that tradition alive."

Newmark Knight Frank Retail also announced that American Apparel has signed a lease at 2831 Broadway, located between 109th and 110th Streets.

The hip clothing retailer will occupy 2,500 s/f of ground floor space, with a 5,000 s/f lower level and significant Broadway frontage.

This is a sublease from Commerce Bank, which continues to occupy the corner retail location at 109th Street and Broadway. Jeffrey D. Roseman, executive vice president at Newmark Knight Frank Retail, represented Commerce Bank, while Craig Slosberg, managing director, also at Newmark Knight Frank Retail, represented the tenant.

"This Upper West Side location is the ideal neighborhood for American Apparel because of its close proximity to Columbia University, resulting in heavy foot traffic seven days a week," said Slosberg.

"The brand, which caters to men, women, kids and dogs, will appeal to both the students and the residents living in the area."

American Apparel is a socially-conscious casual clothing company that has become well-known for its forward thinking and progressive approach to manufacturing and marketing its apparel.

The growing retailer, with over 50 locations in six countries, recently ranked #218 in the Inc. 500, Inc. magazine's list of the nation's fastest-growing private companies.

According to Slosberg, he and the tenant are scouting additional locations in New York City.
