Harvard College, originally for men, was founded in 1636 with a grant from the General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
 (Mass.) rebuked President Lawrence Summers Lawrence Henry "Larry" Summers (born November 30, 1954) is an American economist and academic. He is the 1993 recipient of the John Bates Clark Medal for his work in macroeconomics, was Secretary of the Treasury for the last year and a half of the Bill Clinton administration, and  with its vote of "no confidence" taken at its monthly meeting in March. Although faculty members have criticized Summers in recent weeks first for his remarks about women and their supposed difficulties in the fields of science Fields of science are widely-recognized categories of specialized expertise within science, and typically embody their own terminology and nomenclature.

The faculty's unhappiness with Summers is more problematic than originally assumed, media reports concluded. The vote has no bearing on Summer's job. He reports to Harvard's governing corporation. Still, after the vote was taken he promised to continue mending his relationships with Harvard's scholars.
