The Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University (Mass.) rebuked President Lawrence Summers with its vote of "no confidence" taken at its monthly meeting in March. Although faculty members have criticized Summers in recent weeks first for his remarks about women and their supposed difficulties in the fields of science and math, then for his reportedly unbending management style, the vote of no confidence shocked critics. The faculty's unhappiness with Summers is more problematic than originally assumed, media reports concluded. The vote has no bearing on Summer's job. He reports to Harvard's governing corporation. Still, after the vote was taken he promised to continue mending his relationships with Harvard's scholars.
