Harris Semiconductor licenses DSP Group's Pine- and OakDSPCores; Provides added leverage to address multimedia voice/audio processing.

multimedia voice processing applications, Harris Semiconductor has licensed two core-based digital signal processors, PineDSPCore and OakDSPCore, from DSP Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: DSPG), of Santa Clara, California.

Harris will first apply the OakDSPCore to a voice/audio processor IC which will eventually become part of a video teleconferencing chipset currently in development. Harris Semiconductor is a leader in application-specific high-speed digital signal processing solutions such as image filtering in medical imaging and digital IF processing in communications and this licensing agreement will extend Harris' capabilities into comprehensive system-level chipset solutions that include baseband and speech processing.

Ken Timko, Harris Semiconductor director of multimedia marketing, said, "Design flexibility and performance were key factors behind the selection of the DSP Group cores. OakDSPCore and PineDSPCore let us address all major audio compression/decompression standards, as well as providing the capability for features such as acoustic echo cancellation and voice operated switching. DSP Group's comprehensive development tool set will allow us to quickly add new features to our chipsets to address new market opportunities." Tinko added that the DSP Group license lets Harris extend its high-speed signal processing leadership in communications to include audio processing for a complete system-level focus.

"In wireless, OakDSPCore and PineDSPCore provide Harris with the option to add low-frequency baseband capabilities to its existing portfolio, which includes RF ICs such as low-noise amplifiers, high-speed data converters and digital IF processing ICs for wideband and narrowband down conversions," said Timko. "Now, with Oak and Pine, Harris can cover the baseband portion of the signal processing chain following digital IF processing," he added.

Harris expects to introduce the first products incorporating the DSP Group cores next year.
