With industry experts predicting more than two million subscribers in the U.S. alone by year-end, global sales of this high-speed, always-on Internet service are predicted to sky-rocket, and service providers are preparing to meet these aggressive projections. Harris' CTAS is helping service providers to begin the mass-market deployment of DSL services.

"Provisioning lines to qualify them for DSL service has traditionally been a sticking-point in speedy deployment," said Greg Bublitz, leader of the Access Test and Management business unit of Harris Corporation's Network Support Division (NSD NSD

). "The Harris CTAS helps to expedite this process by providing access to last mile local loops where access would otherwise not be available."

A direct interface between digital subscriber line access multiplexers A Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) allows telephone lines to make faster connections to the Internet. It is a network device, located near the customer's location, that connects multiple customer Digital Subscriber Lines (DSLs) to a high-speed Internet  (DSLAMs) and line test equipment is the most ideal situation, but many DSLAMs do not have built-in test access. CTAS is used downstream of the DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexor) A central office (CO) device for ADSL service that intermixes voice traffic and DSL traffic onto a customer's DSL line. It also separates incoming phone and data signals and directs them onto the appropriate carrier's network. See DSL.  to provide access to the lines, while Harris Remote Test Units (RTUs) are used to perform testing.

"A single CTAS provides analysis and test capability for up to 125 copper loops, and can be daisy-chained to scale to 10,000 loops," said Carol Sherick, product line manager for NSD's access products. "And with the highly reliable performance of the CTAS, service providers can guarantee consistent, quality service to their customers."

The CTAS is only one product in the complete line of Harris DSL provisioning solutions. The product line spans the spectrum from hand-held test sets with data protection capability to a fully integrated management platform. Used in conjunction with Harris RTUs and Wideband Test Pack, CTAS allows service providers to deliver quick, accurate service to their customers. Harris also has a full line of solutions for plain old telephone service (POTS).

These products and capabilities are provided by Harris' Network Support Division (NSD), which delivers solutions to public and private communications service providers A Communications Service Provider or CSP is a company that transports information electronically. The term encompasses public and private companies in the wireline, wireless, Internet, cable, satellite, and managed services businesses.  around the world. NSD's solutions focus on the needs of operations, maintenance, and installation professionals in deregulated telecommunications markets worldwide, by providing next level line test and network management systems, as well as test sets and tools.
