Harris has completed the delivery of 100 First-In Weather Systems to the U.S. Air Force. Several of the systems were used during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The system allows soldiers and airmen to receive current weather data on laptops using a digital radio antenna that weighs less than five pounds. The compact antenna is small enough to fit into a lunch box, eliminating the need for large, cumbersome equipment that can hinder rapid, tactical troop movement.

The weather products are generated by the U.S. Air Force Weather Agency and the 28th Operational Weather Squadron, and then transmitted to one of two commercial satellites that are part of the WorldSpace satellite radio network, covering Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Europe. The weather data is then broadcast directly from these satellites to the portable receivers and laptops of the soldiers and airmen. Harris is the military's prime contractor, providing systems integration, engineering and program management support. WorldSpace has provided the communications infrastructure and portable antenna receivers.
