Harris Corporation Launches World's First Full-Capability Plug-In HDTV Master Control System.


CINCINNATI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 30, 1999--

Harris Corporation today introduced the world's first totally integrated master control module for High Definition Television (HDTV (High Definition TV) A set of digital television (DTV) standards that offer the highest resolution and sharpest picture. Although some HDTV sets are available in standard (rather square) screen sizes, the overwhelming majority of sets are wide screen, which eliminates ). Marketed under the Harris Masterplus(TM) brand name, the full-capability system, which is contained in only three plug-in boards, replaces 13 stand-alone products, significantly reducing HDTV master control system complexity and cost.

According to Jay Adrick, vice president of Harris Broadcast Communications Division's Systems Integration Business Unit, the Masterplus system not only supports the 1080i/720P/480P high-definition formats, but it is the only master control system that accommodates high-definition EAS (Electronic Article Surveillance) A security system for preventing theft in retail stores that uses disposable label tags or reusable hard tags attached to the merchandise.  (Emergency Alerting System) requirements and seamless closed-caption switching among program sources.

Designed for simple implementation, Masterplus includes three boards and an outboard I/O interface breakout box. The boards - a main processor and two I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. Since its introduction in January 1998, Harris FlexiCoder digital television encoding systems have captured more than half of the U.S. ATSC encoder market.

Features include a standard definition-to-high definition up-converter, a high-definition video test generator, two internal keyers with multi-frame buffers, an EAS text generator, frame synchronizers on all inputs and a transition mixer. The system also includes six-channel audio switching and mixing as well as a closed caption data channel switching matrix.

Offering unmatched control capability, Masterplus can be controlled by numerous protocols, including graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI)

Computer display format that allows the user to select commands, call up files, start programs, and do other routine tasks by using a mouse to point to pictorial symbols (icons) or lists of menu choices on the screen as opposed to having to
