WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 11, 2002

Harris Corporation Harris Corporation NYSE: HRS is an international communications equipment company that produces wireless equipment, electronic systems, and both terrestrial and spaceborne antennas for use in the government, defense, and commercial sectors.  (NYSE NYSE

See: New York Stock Exchange
:HRS), a leading supplier of software-defined tactical radios for worldwide defense forces, announced that it will offer a software-defined handheld radio in compliance with the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS JTRS Joint Tactical Radio System

JTRS Joint Tenancy with Right of Survivorship

) program. Demonstration units of the radio will be available mid-2003.

With JTRS, the DoD's mission is to develop a family of software reprogrammable radios sharing a common digital architecture that can be applied to multiple platforms Refers to two or more operating environments, which typically include the CPU family and operating system. For example, if versions of a program run on Windows and the Macintosh, the software is said to support multiple platforms.  and support multiple missions across all defense forces. The procurement includes four phases of acquisition that are referred to as "Clusters."

"The new Harris JTRS-compliant handheld radio will be available for the critical Cluster 2 assessment phase, " said Andy Adams Andy Adams (May 3, 1859 – September 26, 1935) was an American writer of western fiction.

Andy Adams was born in Indiana. His parents, Andrew and Elizabeth (Elliott) Adams, were pioneers. As a boy he helped with the cattle and horses on the family farm.
, director of product management, Harris RF Communications Division. The Cluster 2 phase of the JTRS procurement involves the acquisition of manpack and heldheld units.

"Harris is aligning the development approach of our JTRS-compliant handheld with the DoD's evolutionary acquisition strategy," continued Adams. "Alignment is key to developing a handheld radio that is in sync with the evolving technology requirements of the warfighter."

The DoD recently defined its evolutionary acquisition strategy as a means of quickly getting advanced technology to the battlefield, while providing for future upgradability. As a pioneer in software-defined radio A software-defined radio (SDR) system is a radio communication system which can tune to any frequency band and receive any modulation across a large frequency spectrum by means of programmable hardware which is controlled by software. , Harris has made significant contributions to the early stages of JTRS development and excels at moving radio technology from a manpack to a handheld form. Recently, the company announced that it had developed and shipped more than 3000 of its new very high frequency (VHF (Very High Frequency) The range of electromagnetic frequencies from 30 MHz to 300 MHz. ) radio in less than a year, proving its ability to develop and deliver a handheld radio in a very short period of time.

Harris also recently announced its implementation of a JTRS-compliant voice waveform on a fielded, software-defined radio platform, and successfully conducted on-air interoperability demonstrations of its capabilities. The capabilities of the Harris demonstration radio, called the JTRS manpack testbed radio (JMTR JMTR Japan Material Testing Reactor ), have been exhibited by the JTRS Joint Program Office to government and industry audiences.

"With the success of the JMTR, coupled with our handheld development, Harris is poised to be a leading participant in the Cluster 2 procurement," said Adams.
