"It is our strategy to make this operating system technology available across the broadest range of computer platforms. The agreement with Novell further adds to our secure software revenue and distribution channels; in 1994 we announced agreements to offer Secure/Power UNIX on IBM's RS/6000 and Bull's Escala computers."

"Partnering with Harris Computer Systems is the right move for us and our customers. Working together we can provide a certified B2 secure platform based on today's hardware and software that answers the security needs of both government and private industry. This effort is part of our comprehensive approach to UNIX security, which also includes the security features available in UnixWare, the latest generation of Novell's UNIX OS," said Mike DeFazio, executive vice president and general manager of Novell's UNIX Systems Group.

"The Novell/Harris Computer Systems partnership in the development and evaluation of a B2-level trusted UNIX product represents a significant alliance of experience and technical strength," said John Davis, director of the NCSC. "Leveraging the experience of Novell's UNIX System Group and its software technology should facilitate Harris Computer Systems Corp.'s effort to produce a secure B2 platform on available hardware using current software technology."

Harris Computer Systems Corp. has significant experience in guiding its products through NCSC evaluation: its CX/SX operating system with integrated networking product (LAN/SX) has been evaluated by the NCSC at the B1-level of trust in the U.S. and in Europe. Secure/Power UNIX, based on Novell's UNIX SVR4.2MP is currently in NCSC evaluation at B2 and has also entered ITSEC See NCSC.  evaluation in Europe. Harris Computer Systems plans to evaluate its Secure X Window Manager at the B1-level and its secure networking product at the B2-level. The B1- and B2-level requirements are defined in the NCSC's Trusted Computer Systems Evaluation Criteria (TCSEC See NCSC. ), also known as the "Orange Book," a U.S. government standard.

On Nov. 29, 1994 Harris Computer Systems and Bull announced the availability of Secure/Power UNIX on Bull Information Systems' PowerPC-based Escala computers. To encourage the widespread availability of trusted systems, the NCSC has developed an industry-government relationship, called the Trusted Product Evaluation Program.

This effort focuses on the technical protection capabilities of commercially produced and supported systems, based on the Department of Defense Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria (TCSEC) is a United States Government Department of Defense (DoD) standard that sets basic requirements for assessing the effectiveness of computer security controls built into a computer system.  (TCSEC).
