Harris & Jeffries' Soft-ATM Allows Netcom Systems, Inc. to Deliver High-Performance Test Equipment.

DEDHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 8, 1998--

H&J Supplies Core Software, Delivering Unmatched Performance

Harris & Jeffries, Inc. (H&J), a leading developer of networking protocol software subsystems, announced today that Netcom Systems, Inc. of Chatsworth, Calif. is using H&J's Soft-ATM Signalling Software Subsystem (Soft-ATM SSS SSS
abbr.
sick sinus syndrome
) to deliver extremely high-performance network test and analysis equipment.

Netcom's SmartBits product has become the standard test device for manufacturers of today's advanced networking equipment. Over 600 network equipment manufacturers, telecommunications carriers, and end-users are currently using the SmartBits device to test and analyze network equipment such as hubs, bridges, routers, switches and live networks.

The SmartBits system utilizes Netcom's SmartCard subsystems to scale up to 80 ports and can generate and monitor 1.2 million packets per second. Latency between cards is less than 100 nanoseconds. SmartBits has achieved performance of 300 calls per second per port, delivering up to 12,000 calls per second -- a level unmatched in the industry.

Netcom has achieved these outstanding performance characteristics by utilizing Harris & Jeffries' Soft-ATM software on all of its ATM-based SmartCards. The SmartBits product has become an industry standard test device due in part to Soft-ATM's guaranteed interoperability. Users know that when they buy a SmartBits test system that not only will it test equipment and networks to their breaking point, but that the system will interoperate with disparate network equipment regardless of manufacturer.

"We feel H&J has made a significant contribution to SmartBits' performance with its Soft-ATM software. Soft-ATM is very high performance, but equally important to Netcom is its interoperability. Without wide-ranging interoperability Netcom could not be the industry leader it is today," said Barry Phelps, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Netcom Systems, Inc.

"Soft-ATM is the acknowledged performance leader in the ATM software market, but Soft-ATM provides more than sheer performance. Soft-ATM subsystems are based on advanced software architecture which provides backwards compatibility backwards compatibility - backward compatibility , pre-integration of all subsystems, a developers' toolkit, superior service and support, breadth of product line to satisfy the most advanced applications and an interoperability guarantee to reduce development risks," said Ethan Harris, president of Harris & Jeffries, Inc.
