Harmonic Scales Capacity to/From Cell Towers for Existing and Emerging Mobile Voice, Data and Video Services; New FLXLink(TM) Platforms Also Provide Bandwidth Enhancements for Enterprise Communications and Data Applications.

COLOGNE, Germany -- -Harmonic Inc. (Nasdaq:HLIT) today announced two new rack-mountable platforms for the award-winning FLXLink(TM) transport solutions. The FLXLink HLP (filename extension) hlp - A Microsoft Windows filename extension for hypertext WinHelp files. These are in a proprietary format, and are compiled from source files written in a dialect of RTF.

9200 and HLP 9300 systems enable operators to more flexibly scale bandwidth needed for backhauling mobile voice, data and, more frequently, video content between the fiber-based access network and the towers at the wireless edge, while providing more efficient use of the often limited physical space at the tower site. Also ideal for enterprise applications such as PBX (Private Branch eXchange) An inhouse telephone switching system that interconnects telephone extensions to each other as well as to the outside telephone network (PSTN).  interconnect, VPN (Virtual Private Network) A private network that is configured within a public network (a carrier's network or the Internet) in order to take advantage of the economies of scale and management facilities of large networks. , Internet access See how to access the Internet.  and other managed services An umbrella term for third-party monitoring and maintaining of computers, networks and software. The actual equipment may be inhouse or at the third-party's facilities, but the "managed" implies an ongoing effort; for example, making sure the equipment is running at a certain quality , the new platforms are fully compatible with Harmonic's existing FLXLink scalable T1/E1, 100-Mbps and 1-Gbps solutions.

Around the world, consumers have come to depend on their mobile devices for voice and data services, and are embracing emerging bandwidth-intensive narrowcast To transmit to selected individuals. Cable TV and satellite radio are examples of narrowcast services because they reach only their subscriber base. Mailing lists are another example. Contrast with broadcast. See multicast.  multimedia applications, such as mobile video conferencing See videoconferencing.

and on-demand streaming video A one-way video transmission over a data network. It is widely used on the Web as well as company networks to play video clips and video broadcasts. Computers in home networks stream video to digital media hubs connected to a home theater.  to the handheld. To accommodate the expanding range of services and growing volume of traffic, operators must find a way to efficiently and securely scale the bandwidth to and from the wireless network. This need will be further compounded as various technological advances enable business, entertainment and education to become increasingly untethered Unattached to any data or power source by wire or fiber; in other words: wireless. Contrast with tethered. . In anticipation of the fully unwired world, operators are turning to Harmonic's FLXLink solution -- which is fully interoperable with networking equipment at the operator and customer premises -- to cost-effectively transport services The collective functions of layers 1 through 4 of the OSI model.  using up to 10 distinct wavelengths on the same fiber that carries residential broadband services.

"The future of communications and entertainment is tightly connected to the evolution of mobile technologies that will allow anytime, anywhere and on any device access to existing and yet to be imagined services," said Sunil Frida, Commercial Services Solution Manager for Harmonic Inc. "Harmonic is actively leading the way in making the mobile video, voice and data triple play a reality with advanced digital video and broadband networking solutions. FLXLink's ability to backhaul increasing volumes of wireless content as well as to cost-effectively transport a range of enterprise applications provides a new revenue source for broadband network operators. The new FLXLink HLP 9200 and HLP 9300 platforms are more easily incorporated into the service provider and customer facilities, and provide a more flexible and scalable way to provision bandwidth-intensive services to the wireless edge."

The 2-RU FLXLink HLP 9300 holds up to three T1/E1 cards, each delivering four full T1/E1 circuits and one 100-Mbps Ethernet service. To satisfy the increasing appetite for enterprise bandwidth, the platform can alternatively house a combination of six 100-Mbps and 1-Gbps high-speed Ethernet cards while the 1-RU HLP 9200 holds two NIUs. The new HLP 9300 platform also offers a DC powering option which is often a key requirement for tower site deployments. Operators can enjoy increased service uptime and availability with redundant and hot-swappable AC and DC power supplies. In addition, by enabling the use of the same type of NIU at both the service provider and customer facilities, Harmonic dramatically reduced the spares requirement, further enhancing an already compelling business case.

In use by cable operators and telcos worldwide, FLXLink facilitates the introduction and delivery of a range of value-added services using the existing fiber without affecting the capacity or quality of the currently provisioned services. The FLXLink T1/E1 solution recently won the International Engineering Consortium's prestigious InfoVision Award for best-in-class wireless broadband product, highlighting the product's strength in creating a highly secure, flexible and reliable way for operators to deliver the mobile triple play.
