 in a sea of jocks. But the term "skate" here has more to do with the concept of running out on responsibilities, and unlike his parents, 15-year-old Ian is determined not to do that. , barely able to look after herself. Ian has essentially been raising his ten-year-old brother Sam alone, but the stress of his life is taking a toll. At school, the principal is trying to get rid of him, and Ian is quick to lash out to strike out wildly or furiously; also used figuratively.
