This volume will prove its worth for the busy pastor, professional theologian, thoughtful lay person, or student. It runs the gamut from "aesthetics" to "worship." It contains more than 160 articles of varying size, many of them of substantial length. The articles aim for clarity and accuracy. Written by 150 experts, including some of the leading theologians of our time, they are accessible to lay readers. In fact, the wealth of information here proves that even professionals have lay status when the whole panorama of theological method and content is seen. Given the fact of pluralism in both method and confession, as well as the impact of globalization globalization Process by which the experience of everyday life, marked by the diffusion of commodities and ideas, is becoming standardized around the world. Factors that have contributed to globalization include increasingly sophisticated communications and transportation , this volume is indispensable for the study of Christian theology. This handbook is an updated edition of the 1991 version of this classic theological handbook. It carries 26 new articles, a 20 percent increase. Most of the essays published over a decade ago are retained. The original was published in 1958 with 101 essays with the purpose of introducing students and laity to basic theological terms as they are understood in the academy today. This present volume carries on this work admirably. Compared to the 1991 edition, more attention is given to Roman Catholic theology, women, minorities, the Holocaust, civil rights, Vietnam, the Second Vatican Council Noun 1. More than anything, this volume provides a helpful map through the vast expanses of current theological reflection. Not much attention is given to Lutheran theology per se. However, Patrick Keifert's article on law and gospel The relationship between God's Law and the Gospel is a major topic in Lutheran and Reformed theology. In these traditions, the distinction between the doctrines of Law, which demands obedience to God's will, and Gospel and Gerhard Forde's outstanding article on justification are both gems in this book. Abbreviated encyclopedias such as this are not always effective, due to the unevenness of the quality of the articles. This is not the case here.
