As Shug enters 7th grade, she discovers she's also in love with her best friend from childhood, neighbor boy Mark, who seems oblivious to her charms but is also feeling the first pangs of adolescent testosterone testosterone (tĕstŏs`tərōn), principal androgen, or male sex hormone. One of the group of compounds known as anabolic steroids, testosterone is secreted by the testes (see testis) but is also synthesized in small quantities in the . This book is more charming, though, than many others of the same type. Shug has an unusual amount of common sense and does not allow herself to be talked into conforming for conformity's sake. She goes through all the normal 7th-grade rites of passage: beginning of menstruation menstruation, periodic flow of blood and cells from the lining of the uterus in humans and most other primates, occurring about every 28 days in women. Menstruation commences at puberty (usually between age 10 and 17). , a girlfriend who gets a boyfriend first and seems to be more accepted by the social crowd, public embarrassment, a difficult mother, an absent father, an English teacher who hates her, and meeting a new (boy) friend with romantic possibilities for the future.
