Hamas carefully prepared the demolition of the wall demarcating the
Gaza Strip from Egypt. Taking everyone by surprise, hundreds of
thousands of Gazans swarmed across. Even more surprising, they proved
not to be the poverty-stricken folk of politically motivated myth, but
bought everything for sale in Egyptian shops--cars, bikes, cattle,
provisions--raising local prices and making themselves even more
unpopular than they already were. Israeli sources claim that Hamas
members also carried in better and heavier military equipment than had
previously been at their disposal, and that gangs dispersed into the
surrounding Sinai Desert to prepare for attack. Sure enough, two suicide
bombers reached the town of Dimona, where the Israeli nuclear plant is.
One exploded himself, the other was shot dead before he could detonate.
Egyptian police have meanwhile shot and killed another Gazan preparing a
terror attack, and their army engineers are in the process of rebuilding
the wall of separation. Subsidized by Iran, Hamas believes that taking
out Israel is a simple matter of pulling down walls and smuggling
weapons. One day, it will get the war it is asking for so recklessly.
