Red and Lance have been best friends ever since Red moved to Alderton, Canada. Each of them harbors a painful secret that they can't even share with the other. When Lance's estranged es·trange

 mother AnneMarie shows up in town, Red helps her make contact with him without realizing the pain this will cause. Anne-Marie has plans to take Lance away with her, cutting him off from the only life he's ever known. In his anger and pain, Lance turns away from Red, and starts hanging out with dangerous characters. Red must find a way to repair their friendship before Lance self-destructs and he loses him forever.

This novel deals with important themes, such as friendship, drug abuse, and the relationships between mothers and sons. The writing style is easy to read and understand. However, the characters of Lance and Red are not fully believable be·liev·a·ble

It was initially difficult to figure out what time period the book was set in.
