Hall of Fame event honors Thor Smith.


The work of the late polymer researcher, Dr. Thor L. Smith, will be recognized, as the University of Akron Enrollment in fall 2006 was 23,539 students.[1] The school offers more than 200 undergraduate degrees [2] and 100 graduate degrees [3]. The University's best-known program is its College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, which is located in a  hosts a symposium honoring Smith on the occasion of his induction into the International Rubber Science Hall of Fame.

The symposium, which will take place November 18 in the Goodyear Polymer Center, University of Akron, OH, will be presented by the university's Maurice Morton Institute of Polymer Science and the Rubber Division of the American Chemical Society The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a learned society (professional association) based in the United States that supports scientific inquiry in the field of chemistry. Founded in 1876 at New York University, the ACS currently has over 160,000 members at all degree-levels and in .

Smith, a retired researcher at the IBM Almaden Research Center The IBM Almaden Research Center, located near San Jose, California, is one of IBM's largest research centers, specializing in both basic research in material science and applied research in computer storage, where many refinements and improvements were made in hard disc drive  who died in 1999 at age 79, is being honored for his pioneering studies of the basic engineering properties of elastomers and glassy polymers.

Speakers participating in the symposium will include Dr. Frank Kelley, dean, College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, University of Akron; Sanford Sterstein, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, at Troy, N.Y.; coeducational; founded and opened 1824 as Rensselaer School; chartered 1826.
