Significant Problem

Combining two subject areas--art and French--was the goal of this integrated lesson on tin art for third graders. Materials

12 x 18" (31 x 46 cm) paper, pencils, metal foil, ball-point pens with caps on, acrylic paints, brushes, polyurethane

Guiding Practice

Students began by drawing a large image on paper. The drawing was cut out, leaving a small amount of paper outside the outline. Next a piece of metal foil was cut to accommodate the drawing. The drawing was taped to the foil, and the foil was cut to the size of the drawing. Students placed the foil on a heavy cushion of newspaper and traced with heavy pressure over their drawings to emboss the foil underneath. The paper drawing was removed and students were shown techniques to emboss the foil. Emphasis was placed on first looking at the image and selecting areas to raise by embossing embossing, process of producing upon various materials designs or patterns in relief by mechanical means. The material is pressed between a pair of dies especially adapted to its hardness and the depth of the design needed. , other areas to texture, and others to indent To align text some number of spaces to the right of the left margin. Students painted the foil with acrylic paints and added a final coat of polyurethane for protection.

Assessing Learning

In French classes, students wrote about their art pieces, describing the image they chose, the colors, patterns, etc. These descriptions were displayed along with the artwork.
