[French, from past participle of protéger, to protect, from Old French, from Latin of modern dance pioneer Erick Hawkins Erick Hawkins (April 23 1909 - November 23 1994) was an American dancer and choreographer. Born in Trinidad, Colorado a graduate of Harvard, he was a student of George Balanchine. He became a soloist and the first male dancer in Martha Graham's dance company. . The dancers saunter, swagger, and sashay as if singing to themselves with their bodies. Former Hawkins company director and erstwhile artist-in-residence at Virginia Ballet Theatre, Rosenlieb struck out on his own with Todd Rosenlieb Dance in 2003. Tidewater Community College is a two-year higher education institution in South Hampton Roads consisting of multiple campuses in the cities of Chesapeake, Norfolk, Roper Center for the Performing Arts in Norfolk, VA) featured the Hawkins' classic, Plains Daybreak (1983), along with Rosenlieb's original choreography. At press time, negotiations were still in the works for a permanent rehearsal and classroom space for the company in downtown Norfolk. |
