Hail old-time radio as free, noon-hour concerts begin.


Byline: The Register-Guard

The Lone Ranger, jolly old St. Nick and the Purple People Eater are among the diverse figures expected to turn up at the annual series of free noon-hour concerts held in the Hult Center lobby on Thursdays throughout the performing arts season.

The SHOcase Concert Series opens this Thursday. The weekly 30-minute programs, produced by the Support Hultcenter Operations organization, are free, open to the public and begin at 12:15 p.m.

In addition to the performance, SHO's High School Performing Arts Student of the Month will be introduced at the first program of each month.

The fall schedule:

Thursday - Bob and Meredith Loudon evoke the golden days of radio in ``Old-Time Radio Revisited.''

Oct. 9 - Sharps and Flats, a senior choral group from the Willamalane Adult Activity Center, will sing old favorites.

Oct. 16 - Singer/guitarist Frank Riha will recall rock 'n' roll rock 'n' roll: see rock music.  hits from the 1950s and '60s.

 Vocal Music Department's various choral groups will sing various styles of music from jazz to classical.

Oct. 30 - The Eugene Ballet Company will dance excerpts from "Sleeping Beauty," with narration by choreographer Toni Pimble.

Nov. 6 - Joyel and Company will dance "Journey Beautiful," inspired by choreographer Joyel Moore's poetry.

Nov. 13 - Gamelan gamelan

Indigenous orchestra of Java and Bali and, more generally, of Indonesia and Malaysia. A gamelan usually consists largely of gongs, xylophones, and metallophones (rows of tuned metal bars struck with a mallet). Gamelan polyphony is complex and many-voiced.

Nov. 20 - The Eugene Concert Choir Eugene Concert Choir is a non-profit choral organization based in Eugene, Oregon, United States. It consists of two mixed-voice choruses: the 100-member Eugene Concert Choir (ECC), and the semi-professional chamber group Eugene Vocal Arts Ensemble (EVAE).  will sing Christmas carols and holiday favorites in "An Old-Fashioned Christmas."

Nov. 27 - No program (Thanksgiving holiday).

Dec. 4 - The Eugene Symphony Orchestra will present selections from "Amahl and the Night Visitors Amahl and the Night Visitors

Dec. 11 - The High Tones and Hot Scotts, North Eugene High School's elite jazz choirs, will give a holiday concert directed by Al Villanueva.

Dec. 18 - The Eugene Opera will preview its production of Georges Bizet's "Carmen Carmen
