Haemonetics is Granted Contract from the U.S. Department of Defense for Research to Support Frozen Blood Reserve.

BRAINTREE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 22, 2003

Haemonetics Corporation was awarded a $1.6 million contract from the U.S. Department of Defense to further research on blood freezing technology, the Company announced today. The award supports development of additional red cell freezing protocols for Haemonetics' ACP (Associate Computing Professional) The award for successful completion of an examination in computers offered by the ICCP. (TM) 215 system for use in military and civilian frozen blood reserve programs. Access to frozen blood can be critical during times of war, crisis, or blood shortages when supplies of fresh donor blood are not adequate.

 cleared for use in laboratory processing of some frozen blood. This contract will fund clinical studies to expand the applications for Haemonetics' freezing technology in both the military and civilian sectors. The clinical trials will evaluate additional blood preservation solutions as well as temperature conditions used in frozen blood processing.

Clinical studies will be done at five civilian sites in the U.S. over the next year.
