Summary: A scientist working on the Hadron Collider "big bang" project in Switzerland has been arrested on suspicion of terror links.

A scientist working on the Hadron Collider "big bang" project in Switzerland has been arrested on suspicion of terror links.

The man, who has not been named, is one of two Algerian brothers arrested in Vienne in southeastern France on Thursday suspected of links to al-Qaeda's north African wing.

The European Organisation for Nuclear Research (CERN) said the suspect had been working on an experiment in particle physics as a contractor since 2003.

CERN said in a statement: "His work did not bring him into contact with anything that could be used for terrorism."

The Hadron Collider, buried 100m under the ground near Geneva, is designed to recreate the conditions created immediately after the "big bang".

The machine fires protons round a 17-mile-long tunnel to smash them in to each other.
