The 41-year-old Haag, who won the NCGA Amateur title in 1992 and 1993, punched his ticket into the finals victories over John Enright of Montara in the morning quarterfinals and Gary Vanier of Pleasant Hill in the semis. Haag's opponent in the finals will be 40-year-old James Hay James Hay can refer to:

Haag began the day with a slim 1-up victory over Enright after Haag was 3 up as early as the ninth tee and held that lead through 11. But Enright clawed to within 1 down when Haag bogeyed the 12th and Enright stayed alive with a birdie on the 17th. When Enright could do no better than par on the closing hole, Haag clinched the match and earned the right to face Vanier, who knocked off Joe Negri Joe Negri (born 1930) is a jazz guitarist from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was the fifth time Haag and Vanier would face off in match play, three times coming at the San Francisco City (with Haag beating Vanier in last year's finals) and the other in the Olympic Club championship.

Haag went up relatively early in the match, thanks in great part to a spectacular eagle in the sixth hole. His approach hit a slope behind the hole and spun back smoothly before nestling into the cup.

"That was huge," Haag said. "That pumped me up."

(three down with three to go) after dodging a bullet on the short par-3 15th. Haag hit his tee shot in the water and Vanier was just short of the green. Haag got up and down for four (with the penalty stroke), while Vanier's chip went by the hole and he couldn't make the comebacker for par.

Vanier was able to extend the match when Haag bogeyed 16, but Haag put it away by canning a 33-footer that likely would have raced several feet by had it not hit the cup.

"That putt was moving pretty fast," Haag said with a smile. Haag, who putts in an unorthodox sidesaddle manner, was solid on the greens all day, but conceded that success in the tournament is based on withstanding the inevitable fatigue.

"This tournament is a marathon," said Haag, the NCGA Player of the Year in 1993, 1995 and 1999. "It's all about how much juice you have in your legs."

The 40-year-old Hay expressed the same sentiment after grinding out a victory over fellow NCGA Amateur newcomer Mark Minor of Walnut Creek Walnut Creek, residential city (1990 pop. 60,569), Contra Costa co., W Calif., in the San Francisco Bay area; inc. 1914. Neither player performed exceptionally well, but the turning point for Hay came on the 12th when Minor missed a three-footer for par to win the hole.

Hay drained an eight-footer on the very next hole to go 1 up, then watched Minor make bogey after not getting up and down from one end of the large green to the other. Minor had a chance to extend the match to the 18th, but his birdie try Birdie Try is an overhead view golf arcade game released by Data East in 1988.  on 17 hit the back of the hole and spun out.

Hay earned the trip to the semfinals with a 3&2 decision over Scott Hardy of Pleasant Hill in the morning quarters. Minor began the day by eliminating 16-year-old Kyle Metzler of Rancho Murieta, denying Metzler a second straight trip to the semifinals.

"I hit it well but I almost ran out of energy," said Hay, who finished third at the NCGA Public Links Championship at Spyglass Hill last month. "I'm old and out of shape. It was sheer grinding at the end."

Hay said the key to his match with Haag tomorrow will be "getting to him early," though that may be tough with Haag's prowess on the front nine in both matches Thursday (he shot 35 in the morning match. The scheduled 36-hole finale will start at 7 a.m. with the second 18 holes commencing at noon.
