HYPE FOR L.A. RACE MISLEADING; FEW NASCAR STARS WILL RUN FEATHERLITE.

Byline: BILL SCHLOTTER Motor Sports

Despite what you might have thought you heard on your radio, this is not Winston Cup auto racing.

This is not Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt and Rusty Wallace.

It is not the Rainbow Warriors, tire controversy and 180 mph.

But it is NASCAR NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing), organization that sanctions American stock-car races, est. 1948. It held its first race in Daytona Beach, Fla.  - albeit it's rookie-level Featherlite Southwest Tour with a few bona fide Winston Cup stars tossed in to sweeten the draw. And Bill Burke and fellow organizers of this weekend's Ford Los Angeles Street Los Angeles Street is a historic avenue in Downtown Los Angeles, California.

Traffic on the street travels northbound only, from the I-10 Freeway in the south of downtown, through the Fashion District, and on through Little Tokyo, where it ends after passing between LAPD
Race hope to bring a handsome crowd downtown for three days of racing around the boulevards and avenues of L.A.

Burke denies radio spots that beckoned race fans to ``come watch the NASCARs run,'' were deceptive.

Purchasers of advance grandstand tickets, which Burke says have sold briskly, were clearly advised the main-event race involved NASCAR's Southwest Tour, not its Winston Cup superstars, he said.

Besides, he said, most Southern Californians are somewhat out of the loop when it comes to auto racing.

``My attitude is most people don't know the difference between the Southwest Tour and Winston Cup in California,'' he said.

We're pretty sure they do, but Burke promises exciting racing regardless of who is on the 1.4-mile track, which runs through Exposition Park just outside the Memorial Coliseum.

With the help of event sponsor Ford, some genuine NASCAR major leaguers will be behind the wheel Monday for the Kragen Z-One 200, the newest and by far the most-hyped event on NASCAR's Featherlite Southwest Tour.

Flying out from Darlington, S.C., at the bequest of Ford, following Sunday's Southern 500, will be Mark Martin - one of the genuine stars of Winston Cup racing. Fellow Winston Cup regulars Ken Schrader and Chad Little and Craftsman Truck superstar Ron Hornaday Jr. are also expected.

Martin, who will also race Saturday in the Busch Grand National race in Darlington, has said he hopes to become the first driver he knows of to win three NASCAR events on successive days.

A variety of other racing tours will run in events that begin at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The American City Racing League features open-wheel Indy-like cars racing in a team scoring format. The Porsche Pro Racing series, obviously, runs sports cars. And the Ultra Wheels Spec Truck Series - where Hornaday will race - features pickup trucks.

Burke's weekend of racing differs from most events in that actual racing - not merely practice and qualifying - will take place on each of the three days.

The ACRL ACRL Association of College and Research Libraries
ACRL Administrative Cost Reimbursements to Localities
and the Porsche Pro series will race all three days. The Spec trucks will race Sunday and Monday. And the Southwest Tour cars, which practice Saturday and qualify on Sunday, race on Monday.

Grandstand tickets range from $8 for a child's seat on Saturday to $50 for an adult three-day pass. General admission, which Burke said is all but limitless, varies in price from $5 for a child on Saturday to a $25 adult three-day pass.

Ticket information: 1-800-690-RACE.

The Kid: Jeff Gordon always has a streak of one kind or another going these days.

On Sunday, Gordon, who has won four of the past six Winston Cup events, attempts to win his fourth straight Southern 500 at Darlington, S.C. He will also be going for his second straight $1-million bonus awarded to the driver who finishes in the top five at the Brickyard 400 - which Gordon won - and then wins the Southern.

Also in the running are Mark Martin, Bobby Labonte, Mike Skinner and Dale Earnhardt, who followed Gordon to the finish line at Indy.

Taking over: The reason for Max Papis' sudden resignation from the Arciero-Wells race team came to light this week, when Bobby Rahal named Papis to replace him next season.

Rahal is said to have chosen Papis from a list that included fellow CART star Jimmy Vasser.

Cross your fingers: Rumor has it that the moguls of CART and the rival Indy Racing League The Indy Racing League, better known as IRL, is the sanctioning body of a predominantly American based open-wheel racing series.

The League consists of two series, the premiere IndyCar Series
are working behind the scenes to create a scenario that would allow CART to return to the Indianapolis 500 by 2000.

Let's hope it's more than wishful thinking. Without CART, the once-premier auto race in the world has become just another event.
