HYDRO-QUEBEC CLARIFICATION CONCERNING TRANSMISSION OF ELECTRICITY FROM THE PLANNED GREAT WHALE COMPLEX

MONTREAL, April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- In a release issued yesterday, the Grand Council of the Crees of Quebec and the Cree Regional Authority made an assertion about the future planned Great Whale complex which Hydro-Quebec wishes to clarify. In the release, it was stated that a promise was made (by Hydro-Quebec) to U.S. purchasers that the electricity from the Great Whale project would be carried to them over a direct-current dedicated line.
Hydro-Quebec has never promised such transmission to its US customers. No line is planned to run between the planned Great Whale complex and the United States. In this regard, Hydro-Quebec wishes to remind all interested parties that the Great Whale project is required to meet the electricity needs of Quebec customers and not for export purposes.
To transmit the energy that will be generated at the planned Great Whale complex, Hydro-Quebec plans to build a 315-kV alternating current collector system which will be about 175 kilometers long, and to link it to the existing 735-kV alternating-current system of the La Grande complex which will carry the energy generated to the consumption centers.
With regard to exports, all the interconnections envisaged by Hydro- Quebec are presently in service and no additional interconnections are planned.
