Samuel Baca Duran, 54, was arrested after he was spotted outside a Woodland Hills bank and was being held without bail.

``This is a very, very brutal homicide,'' said Capt. Joe Curreri of the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Police Department's Devonshire Division.

Teresa Duran, 56, died Monday evening on Vanalden Avenue near Schoenborn Street after being pulled from her car by her hair, beaten, stabbed and run over twice, investigators say.

The Durans were in the middle of a messy divorce, police said, and Teresa Duran had obtained a restraining order restraining order: see injunction.  against her husband in April.

She had moved to a safe house two months ago, friends said, and had put her house up for sale. She was in the neighborhood to check on it.

``They were always one of those couples the neighbors always wondered about,'' a friend said, recalling that one Christmas, Teresa Duran suffered a broken jaw and missing teeth. ``She told me he had beaten her up.''

Friends and neighbors, most of whom declined to give their names, citing their fear of Samuel Duran, said there was a history of violence and domestic abuse in the couple's marriage.

``He was a very macho man, the king of the castle,'' the friend said. ``It was very clear to all of the (people) who knew them.''

Neighbors said they knew about the abuse.

``You'd never think he'd go this far,'' said neighbor Harry Middione. ``He beat on her pretty good. He'd joke with her and say, 'Let's go for a hike so I can push you off the cliff.' ''

Friends said Samuel Duran recently pulled all the furniture out of the house when his wife put it up for sale.

in the late 1980s. He was sentenced to seven years, although neighbors said he was released after a few years. The inspector lost an eye in the attack, in which Duran hit him with his fists and a shoe.

``(The inspector) came out to rearrange my attitude, but, as you can see, he got his face rearranged instead,'' Duran wrote in a letter to the court. ``He is complaining about his eye. He is lucky he didn't get shot.''

Police said that on Monday evening, Samuel Duran used a white Ford minivan to force his wife's car against a truck. He then got out, pulled her out of the car by the hair, and beat her in front of children and adults living on the quiet residential street, officers said.

Witnesses tried to restrain the man.

``Three of (the neighbors) had him and they still couldn't hold him down,'' said Asael Gonzalez Jr., 30.

Teresa Duran was walking backward away from her attacker with her hands up as he ran back to the car, picked up what appeared to be a chef's knife In cooking, a chef's knife, also known as a French knife, is a cutting tool used in food preparation. The chef's knife is an evolution of the butcher knife, and was originally designed primarily to slice and disjoint large cuts of beef.  and ran toward her, Gonzalez said.

``He stabbed her seven, eight, nine times - just hacking away,'' Gonzalez said.

A witness threw a bicycle to try to stop the attack. But after beating and stabbing Teresa Duran, the attacker ran over her twice.

``He wanted to kill her. He wanted to make sure she was dead,'' Gonzalez said.

On Tuesday, family members of Teresa Duran went to a memorial set up where she was killed, kneeling and weeping as they recalled her life and death.
