HURDLES AHEAD FOR MAHONY'S NEW CHURCHES FUNDING, PRIESTS IN SHORT SUPPLY.Byline: PATRICIA PATRICIA Practical Algorithm To Retrieve Information Coded In Alphanumeric PATRICIA Proving and Testability for Reliability Improvement of Complex Integrated Architectures PATRICIA PApilloma TRIal Cervical cancer In young Adults FARRELL AIDEM Staff Writer Cardinal Roger Mahony approved plans earlier this year for five new Catholic churches in the North County, but two huge hurdles stand in the way -- money and a dwindling number of priests. New parishes are proposed for Castaic, Palmdale, Lancaster, Stevenson Ranch and in the planned 25,000-home Centennial community near Gorman, said Deacon Richard Medina of the San Fernando Pastoral Region The San Fernando Pastoral Region is a pastoral region of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in the Roman Catholic Church. It covers the San Fernando, Santa Clarita, and Antelope Valleys. The current regional auxiliary bishop is Bishop Gerald E. Wilkerson. of the Los Angeles Archdiocese. ``There's no money available right now,'' Medina said. ``The mother parishes would have to take on the fundraising and the diocese would help. But none of that's been worked out.'' The Catholic population in the Antelope and Santa Clarita valleys is roughly gauged at 30 percent to 35 percent based on demographics, Medina said. ``That's a pretty large percentage and with the growth that is happening in both valleys, we need to be planning for it,'' he said. As for the new priests that would be needed, even before the sex scandal in the priesthood surfaced, numbers were dropping. There are two "official" definitions—the Los Angeles metropolitan area consisting only of the Los Angeles and Orange , not nearly enough to make up for those who die, retire or leave the priesthood, Medina said. Solving the priest shortage is making the church rethink how parishes are run and prompting a call for prayers from the classroom to the meeting room for men to heed the call. At a February meeting of the pastoral council, Bishop Gerald E. Wilkerson announced as one of his priorities the fostering of priestly vocations. He asked that children in the Catholic schools and other religious classes open and close sessions with special prayers to draw men to the priesthood. ``One of the things we see is that we need the parents to encourage vocations,'' Medina said. ``They're saying, `But we want grandchildren, we don't want our son to go into the priesthood. ``The shortage isn't because of the scandal, though that does need to be resolved before we can move forward. But (the shortage) has been going on a lot longer than that.'' The shrinking priesthood is prompting the archdiocese to rethink how churches run. One model has the laity operating the church and priests from other parishes visiting to say Masses. Another idea is called ``twinning,'' where one pastor runs two parishes, splitting his time between both congregations. ``We need to look at all the models to see what's best to work for each parish,'' he said. ``Then with all the planning in the world, we have to look at alternatives if we don't know Don't know (DK, DKed) "Don't know the trade."
