Of all the challengers to Sylmar High School's reign on the Valley Pac-8 title, Canoga Park wasn't even mentioned. But here they are, Rudy Lugo's lovable lov·a·ble also love·a·ble adj. Having characteristics that attract love or affection. lov Hunters. The ultimate underdog, traveling to Sylmar with the hopes to taking away the conference title. They went along unnoticed for most of the season. Canoga Park lost its conference opener to Monroe, then began tripping up any Valley Pac-8 contenders. First it was North Hollywood, then Grant, then Van Nuys. Finally, the Hunters were the only ones left to challenge Sylmar's 52-game league/conference winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins streak, run - an unbroken series of events; "had a streak of bad luck"; "Nicklaus had a run of birdies" . ``It's a great honor As a verb, to accept a bill of exchange, or to pay a note, check, or accepted bill, at maturity. The Hunters' arrival is no accident. Quarterback Brian Hickman has thrown for 1,321 yards and 16 touchdowns to lead the conference. And - surprisingly - Canoga Park's leading rusher (Junior Galvan) has outgained Sylmar's best (Donald Carpenter) 909 to 704. Offensively, the Hunters rank ahead of Sylmar in yards per game and have averaged 25 points per game. ``This is as good of a Canoga Park team as I've seen in a long time,'' Sylmar coach Jeff Engilman said. ``I've looked at tapes and they're dangerous. They definitely present a challenge.'' Canoga Park's success can be attributed to its passing game. Hickman has burned secondaries along with receiver Kevin Carlsen, who leads the Valley Pac-8 with 44 catches for 655 yards and 13 touchdowns The Hunters, who mix the pass and run, surprise many Valley Pac-8 teams not accustomed to defending the pass. ``That has been the key to our season,'' Lugo said. ``Carlsen is like a coach on the field and Hickman knows how to stay poised under pressure.'' The question begging to be asked is whether the Hunters can really compete with Sylmar. Engilman asks: Which Sylmar? ``We have been two different teams,'' Engilman said. ``It's frustrating frus·trate tr.v. frus·trat·ed, frus·trat·ing, frus·trates 1. a. There's the Sylmar that beat Monroe 47-20 last week, the same Monroe squad that defeated Canoga Park by two touchdowns in the conference opener. Then there's the Sylmar team that struggled to beat Grant two weeks ago. Engilman felt the Grant game was the team's worst effort of the season. Suffering from high blood pressure, Engilman refrained from a tirade. ``I told them to think about their performance,'' Engilman said. ``The entire offensive line got together that weekend and figured out what they wanted out of this season.'' This is a crucial game for Sylmar, not only because of the conference title but because a win locks up a fourth or fifth seed in the City 4-A playoffs. It will need a solid performance from quarterback Chris Cervantes. The senior has thrown for 946 yards and 14 touchdowns. With Errol Bowen out for the season with a broken collarbone col·lar·bone n. State) on this team,'' Engilman said. ``If this team plays to its potential, we can make a title run. If we don't we could be out in the first round.'' Cervantes could be without his top tight end in Jose Ochoa, who is doubtful with a sprained knee. Linebacker Derrell Daniels will replace Ochoa. Sylmar's defense hopes to rattle Hickman with a pass rush. Engilman has not been pleased with the way the secondary has defended the pass, so some big plays could happen. ``We can't turn the ball over,'' Lugo said. ``If we do, then we're done. The best way for us to win is keep their offense off the field.'' Sylmar will try to use Carpenter's running to open up the short passing game. Sylmar's receivers haven't been highly recognized but Shaun Avalos and Tywane Patterson are both dangerous. The club has also not turned the ball over very many times. Sylmar: The Spartans have won six straight since losing two of their first three. A 52-game winning streak in the Valley Pac-8 Conference will be tough to snap. Quarterback Chris Cervantes has shown flashes of brilliance this season with 14 TD passes and just one interception. Tailback Donald Carpenter has had a solid season and the Spartans have two of the fastest receivers in Tywane Patterson and Shaun Avalos in the conference. Linebacker Derrell Daniels is being courted by several Division I schools. WEAKNESSES Canoga Park: Can the Hunters play big in a big game? It's been so long that the answer is a mystery. What happens when Hickman faces a fierce pass rush on the road at Sylmar? And can the Hunters really run the ball at Sylmar's huge line? There's so many questions because Canoga Park is a novice in conference title games. Sylmar: The Spartans have been two teams this season. Sylmar: The Spartans could either play a great game heading into the playoffs or give coach Jeff Engilman the impression they're ready to be beaten. This game will tell.
