HUNDREDS RENEW THEIR VOWS.

George and Marietta Vidal met as neighbors in the Philippines more than half a century ago.

He thought she was beautiful the first day he saw her and still does today, after 50 years of marriage.

``She's just as gorgeous,'' the 70-year-old said Sunday as they renewed their marriage vows Marriage vows are promises a couple makes to each other during a wedding ceremony.

Civil ceremonies often allow couple's to choose their own vows, although many civil marriage vows are adapted from the traditional Catholic wedding vow "To have and to hold, from this day

The San Pedro couple, dressed in cream-colored Philippine wedding attire, joined more than 225 couples Sunday at St. John Baptist de la Salle De La Salle is the name of several educational institutions affiliated with the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, also known as the Lasallian Brothers, a Roman Catholic religious teaching order founded by French priest Saint Jean-Baptiste de la Salle:

Love and understanding were the keys to their long marriage, George Vidal said. ``And patience,'' added his wife.

Raul and Isabella Martinez from the city of Bell had been married for 25 years.

Raul, 44, said you need to be strong from the beginning ``and that's how you last a long time.''

Lucas, himself married for 16 years, said Sunday's celebration shows that ``marriage actually works. People can do it.''

World Marriage Day was inaugurated in 1982 by World Wide Marriage Encounter.

The Los Angeles Archdiocese has been honoring couples celebrating golden and silver anniversaries since 1986.

In addition to the 225 couples celebrating with Cardinal Mahony in Granada Hills, more than 1,000 other couples were to be honored during Masses with auxiliary bishops in the five pastoral regions of the Los Angeles Archdiocese.
