HULETT UNLOADERS AT C&P DOCK TO CLOSE AT END OF SHIPPING SEASON

HULETT UNLOADERS AT C&P DOCK TO CLOSE AT END OF SHIPPING SEASON
PHILADELPHIA, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Consolidated Rail Corporation (NYSE: CRR) (Conrail) announced today that it will discontinue using the 80-year-old Hulett unloading machines for water-to-rail iron ore transfers at its C&P Dock in Cleveland after the current Great Lakes shipping season.
Conrail will continue to handle iron ore in self-unloading vessels under contracts with its customers.
Conrail also said that the future of C&P Dock, located at Whiskey Island, is under study, and it will appear on its System Diagram Map (SDM), to be published in June, as a Category 1 facility. Category 1 lines and facilities are those expected to be the subject of abandonment or discontinuance applications before the Interstate Commerce Commission within a three-year period. A listing does not commit Conrail to seek abandonment.
The study and Category 1 listing apply only to the dock. Direct rail service to customers at Whiskey Island is unaffected.
Conrail said the future of ore transfer operations at C&P Dock ultimately will be decided by its customers, as they determine how and where inbound shipments will be handled. The decision to discontinue use of the Hulett machines was based on the accelerated trend of customers to ship ore by self-unloading vessels which do not require Hulett operation. Because of their condition -- the Huletts went into service 80 years ago -- they would require costly and extensive rehabilitation if Conrail continued to operate them beyond the 1992 season.
Conrail operates a rail-freight transportation network in 14 Northeastern and Midwestern states, the District of Columbia, and the Province of Quebec.
