HUGHES UNVEILS MOST ADVANCED DUAL-MODE CELLULAR TELEPHONE
 ON THE MARKET
NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Hughes Network Systems, Inc. (HNS), a pioneer in digital and wide-area telecommunications, today unveiled its "digital ready," dual-mode M6100 cellular telephone. The M6100 cellular phone is designed to accommodate the industry's coming transition from analog to digital, and to use the latest in digital technology to provide superior audio quality for the cellular subscriber.
With the enhanced precision of digital technology, sound clarity is significantly improved over current analog systems. Besides the ability to eliminate background noise and transmit only the actual voice during a call, digital technology promises to increase capacity and extend opportunities for value-added services for cellular carriers. The M6100 meets or exceeds all industry standards, including IS-54.
The M6100 was specifically engineered to optimize a user's cellular investment, with technology that resists obsolescence, as well as features that save time and reduce costs for carriers and subscribers. The M6100's safety and ease-of-use considerations include a dot-matrix Vacuum Fluorescent display with wraparound lens. This feature provides unsurpassed readability in all lighting conditions and from all angles. The M6100 also supports a full complement of advanced features including alphanumeric capability, 99 memory locations and easy-to-read, scrolling menus.
Said Pradeep Kaul, executive vice president of HNS: "Our M6100 dual-mode phone represents the most advanced cellular subscriber unit on the market today. The phone's design optimizes both aesthetic appeal and technical functionality to offer carriers and subscribers the best value for their money."
HNS Chairman and CEO Jack A. Shaw hailed the phone's debut as a significant step toward realizing the concept of Personal Communications Networking. "The M6100 not only builds on HNS' expertise in digital technology, but advances our vision of a 'wireless world,' with traditional limits on communications all but erased," he said.
Commercial availability of the M6100 is slated for third quarter 1992.
