HUGHES AIRCRAFT GETS $250 MILLION IN AMRAAM, TOW CONTRACTS
TUCSON, Ariz., June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Hughes Aircraft Co.'s Missile Systems Group has been awarded contracts totaling one-quarter of a billion dollars for two major production programs at its facility in Tucson.
The U.S. Army awarded Hughes a $236,995,178 contract for 14,923 advanced TOW anti-armor missiles, to be delivered by May 1994. Under the terms, Hughes is to produce 12,600 TOW 2B missiles, 2,167 TOW 2A missiles and 156 TOW 2A practice missiles for the U.S. Army Missile Command, Redstone Arsenal, Ala.
Since the first version of TOW was introduced in 1970, Hughes has continually upgraded the anti-armor weapon. The TOW 2B is the latest member of the TOW family built for the U.S. Army and Marine Corps, plus the armed services of more than three dozen other nations.
In addition, the U.S. Air Force awarded Hughes a contract worth $14,255,579 for delivery of 40 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAMs), to be added to the Lot VI production buy announced March 23. The new contract, released by the Aeronautical Systems Division of Elgin Air Force Base, Fla., covers deliveries through November 1994.
The AMRAAM was designed and developed by Hughes for use by the Air Force, Navy and allied nations.
Hughes Aircraft, a unit of GM Hughes Electronics, was awarded both new contracts on May 29.
The Hughes facility in Tucson also delivers Phoenix air-to-air missiles for the Navy and Maverick air-to-surface missiles for the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps.
