HP announces Optical Jukebox with two-disk transport system; Jukebox performs 40 percent faster disk exchange; Next-generation midrange Jukebox provides flexible solutions for fast performance and lower cost per megabyte.PALO ALTO Palo Alto, city, California Palo Alto (păl`ō ăl`tō), city (1990 pop. 55,900), Santa Clara co., W Calif.; inc. 1894. Although primarily residential, Palo Alto has aerospace, electronics, and advanced research industries. , Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 6, 1995--Adding to its line of SureStore Optical Jukeboxes See optical disc library. , Hewlett-Packard Company today announced the SureStore Optical 80st Jukebox A storage device for multiple sets of CD-ROMs, DVDs, tape cartridges or disk modules. Using carousels, robot arms and other methods, a jukebox physically moves the storage medium from its assigned location to an optical or magnetic station for reading and writing. family. The new midrange midrange Epidemiology The halfway point or midpoint in a set of observations; for most data, MR is calculated as the sum of the smallest observation and the largest observation, divided by 2; for age data, one is added to the numerator; a midrange is usually family features a two-disk transport system that cuts disk-exchange time to six seconds, which is 40 percent faster than HP's previous optical jukebox products. This new jukebox delivers the industry's fastest disk-exchange time and is ideal for use with document- and image-management solutions. The new 80st family offers storage capacities of 40GB to 98GB. HP's flexible solution allows customers to choose configurations that best suit their needs: two or four multifunction drives and 32, 64 or 76 cartridge slots. Customers who use the jukebox primarily for archiving infrequently used files and who are concerned with lowering cost per megabyte One million bytes, or more precisely 1,048,576 bytes. Also MB, Mbyte and M-byte. See mega and space/time. (unit) megabyte - (MB, colloquially "meg") 2^20 = 1,048,576 bytes = 1024 kilobytes. 1024 megabytes are one gigabyte. can choose the two-drive, 76-cartridge configuration. Administrators who support many users, and thus need faster access times, can select the four-drive, 64-cartridge configuration. Additional drive or cartridge upgrades allow customers to change their configurations as needed as needed prn. See prn order. . Two-Disk Transport System The two-disk transport system decreases the time it takes the jukebox to change disks when new data is requested. Single-disk-transport jukeboxes perform exchanges through two moves. The first move takes the disk from the optical drive and moves the disk to its home storage slot. The second move takes the requested disk from its home slot and inserts it into the optical drive, at which point the optical drive spins up. The two-disk transport system performs exchanges through a single move. The requested disk is retrieved from its home slot while the optical drive is spinning down. The disk is moved to the optical drive and exchanged with the disk that is currently in the drive. The drive spins up while the original disk is returned to its home slot. The advantage of using two-disk transport is the speed that results from ability to spin the drive up and down simultaneously while disks are being exchanged. User Benefits The HP SureStore Optical 80st Jukebox family features a SCSI-2 interface and allows customers to select single-ended or differential mode simply by moving a switch on the side of the unit. In addition, a direct-LAN-connect version is available, which includes all the hardware and software necessary to connect the jukebox to any point on an NFS (Network File System) The file sharing protocol in a Unix network. This de facto Unix standard, which is widely known as a "distributed file system," was developed by Sun. See file sharing protocol and WebNFS. NFS - Network File System (1) network without the need for a dedicated server. The LAN-connect version includes several data-management features developed specifically for efficient network operation: Data directories reside on the built-in hard disk for enhanced performance; the hard-disk cache stores frequently used files, making requests fast and efficient; and the additional storage capacity looks like one big disk to the network. A new swivel control panel gives customers the flexibility to position the unit in their computer rooms for maximum efficiency and convenience. Targeted Applications The midrange jukebox is targeted at users who require imaging/document management solutions and computer output to laser-disk (COLD) solutions -- particularly for applications such as financial and stock-exchange trading data, insurance-forms processing, accessing archival data and CAD storage. The new jukebox is supported on all major operating systems Operating systems can be categorized by technology, ownership, licensing, working state, usage, and by many other characteristics.
