HP and SVi form OEM relationship for disk-drive test.

PALO ALTO Palo Alto, city, California
Palo Alto (păl`ō ăl`tō), city (1990 pop. 55,900), Santa Clara co., W Calif.; inc. 1894. Although primarily residential, Palo Alto has aerospace, electronics, and advanced research industries.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 6, 1995-- Hewlett-Packard Company and Scotts Valley Instruments (SVi) today announce an original equipment manufacturing relationship granting HP exclusive, worldwide marketing and sales rights to SVi's family of SAX-1 sampled data channel test instruments for the disk-drive industry. The SAX-1 products are complete test equipment that let users characterize and test heads, media and disk drives that use partial-response maximum-likelihood (PRML (Partial Response Maximum Likelihood) A technique used to differentiate a valid signal from noise by measuring the rate of change at various intervals of the rising waveform. ) and other sampled data channels. PRML is a new digital technique used to read data from a high-density hard-disk drive. Unlike other test equipment, the SAX-1 products do not have to integrate commercial PRML decoder A hardware device or software that converts coded data back into its original form. See decode and MPEG decoder.  chips in order to test a disk drive.

"The SAX-1 family of test instruments is part of HP's commitment to provide advanced technology to its customers in the disk-drive industry," said Sam Ojeda, market development manager for HP's Kobe Instrument Division.

"We are very excited about our relationship with HP and are looking forward to our advanced technology having the benefit of HP's world-class marketing, service and support," said David Saxby, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  and founder of SVi.

The SAX-1 family offers testing flexibility. With synchronous sampling at 500 mega-samples per second and a 13-tap finite impulse response (electronics, DSP) Finite Impulse Response - (FIR) A type of digital signal filter, in which every sample of output is the weighted sum of past and current samples of input, using only some finite number of past samples.  filter, users can study any sampled data channel -- including all of the standard PRML channels. Production features include plug compatibility with commercial spin stands, software-configurable channel settings and PRML tests that run orders of magnitude faster than oscilloscope oscilloscope (əsĭl`əskōp'), electronic device used to produce visual displays corresponding to electrical signals. Displays of such nonelectrical phenomena as the variations of a sound's intensity can be made if the phenomena are  tests, which depend on over-sampling techniques.
