), today announced that Portable Graphics will develop, sell and support a hardware accelerated implementation of OpenGL for HP 9000 family of graphics workstations. The product is expected to be available in the first quarter of 1996.

"Providing the foremost accelerated OpenGL for HP workstations enhances our leadership as a supplier of quality OpenGL and Open Inventor solutions," said Bhupi Bhasin, president of Portable Graphics. "Combined with HP's legendary strengths in graphics technology, this opens up a new level of capabilities for 3-D graphics software developers."

"With OpenGL for HP, developers will be able to compose superior high-performance 2-D and 3-D graphics on HP workstations," said Mark A. Canepa, general manager of HP's Workstation Systems Division. "This is particularly beneficial for our growing base of developers in areas such as oil and gas, animation, digital studio and visualization."

Portable Graphics' implementation of OpenGL will fully utilize HP's graphic acceleration for 3-D systems, and HP's Color Recovery technology to create true color visuals (24-plane) on low-cost (8-plane) graphics workstations. It is being designed to be fully compliant with the OpenGL specification and compliance tests adopted by the OpenGL Architectural Review Board (ARB).

OpenGL Utility Libraries -- which contain routines using lower-level OpenGL commands to set up specific viewing orientations and projections matrices, perform polygon tessellation In surface modeling and solid modeling, the method used to represent 3D objects as a collection of triangles or other polygons. All surfaces, both curved and straight, are turned into triangles either at the time they are first created or in real time when they are rendered.  and render surfaces -- will be included.

OpenGL is a vendor-neutral, open application programming interface for developing high-performance 2-D and 3-D graphics applications to support a range of computers, from PCs to workstations to supercomputers.

With this agreement, Portable Graphics extends its relationship with HP and HP software developers beyond providing NPGL NPGL Non Planar Graphics Library , a porting tool that allows applications developed with the IRIS GL graphics library to run on HP workstations.

Austin, Texas-based Portable Graphics provides graphics software developers with open-system cross-platform porting and development solutions for GL-based 3-D visualization applications on a wide variety of platforms. The company is the leading third-party supplier of GL, OpenGL and Open Inventor on workstations and PC platforms.

HP is the second-largest computer supplier in the United States, with computer-related revenue of $19.6 billion in its 1994 fiscal year.
