, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 25, 1998-- Hewlett-Packard Company today said that it has stepped up commercial production of its Gigabit Ethernet An Ethernet standard that transmits at 1 Gbps. Used mostly to connect high-end workstations and servers as well as for network backbones, Gigabit Ethernet transmits full duplex from point to point using switches and half duplex in a shared environment (CSMA/CD) using a hub.  fiber-optic transceivers and SERDES See serializer/deserializer.  ICs to meet the market demand for field-ready local area network (LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. ) equipment.

HP provides a complete portfolio of physical-layer technology to network-equipment companies, which are beginning to sell Gigabit Ethernet equipment in increasing quantities. Gigabit Ethernet equipment sales are expected to increase to $266 million this year compared to $58.9 million in 1997, according to according to

HP supplies laser-based Gigabit Ethernet transceivers in a variety of industry-standard package styles, including Duplex SC and Gigabit Interface Convertor (GBIC (GigaBit Interface Converter) A hardware module used to attach network devices to fiber-based transmission systems such as Fibre Channel and Gigabit Ethernet. The GBIC converts the serial electrical signals to serial optical signals and vice versa. ) platforms. GBICs offer equipment designers and system users increased flexibility by allowing hot-pluggable system-configuration changes and upgrades in the field. HP also supplies a range of complementary SERDES ICs, which offer designers a complete physical-layer gigabit solution. These components are at the heart of the new switches and routers that are coming to market. In-Stat expects the total market for these physical-layer components to be about $20.6 million this year and $60.7 million in 1999.

Gigabit Ethernet is the next generation of classic Ethernet technology -- the most popular means of connecting PCs and servers in a LAN. Ethernet provides bandwidth of 10Mb/s in its basic configuration. Fast Ethernet An earlier name for 100Mbps Ethernet. See 100Base-T.

(networking) Fast Ethernet - A version of Ethernet developed in the 1990s(?) which can carry 100 Mbps compared with standard Ethernet's 10 Mbps. It requires upgraded network cards and hubs.
at data rates of 100Mb/s -- introduced about four years ago -- now has been widely adopted. As a result, there is increasing demand in enterprise buildings and campuses for higher-bandwidth backbone connections for switch-to-switch and switch-to-server interconnects, which are needed to support this traffic increase.

HP has played a key role in the development of Gigabit Ethernet technology and is a member of the Gigabit Ethernet Alliance, an industry consortium. HP is supporting the industry's standardization efforts through the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, New York, www.ieee.org) A membership organization that includes engineers, scientists and students in electronics and allied fields.  committee, and chairs the IEEE 802.3z Optical PMD (Polarization Mode Dispersion) The type of dispersion that occurs in singlemode fiber due to a lack of perfect symmetry in the fiber and from external pressures on the cable. Light travels over singlemode fiber in two polarization states.  Committee and the Modal Bandwidth Investigation taskforce. HP is actively involved in supporting the industry efforts currently under way to resolve the remaining technical issue of Differential Mode Delay-related jitter A flicker or fluctuation in a transmission signal or display image. The term is used in several ways, but it always refers to some offset of time and space from the norm. For example, in a network transmission, jitter would be a bit arriving either ahead or behind a standard clock cycle  on multimode fiber. HP is participating in these activities, which are expected to bring the Gigabit Ethernet standard to closure by summer.

HP continues to supply network-equipment companies with IEEE 802.3z-compliant components in line with standardization progress and market demand for field-ready Gigabit Ethernet network systems.

"The demand for our Gigabit Ethernet components is increasing on a comparable scale to the rapid growth rates Growth Rates

we experienced in Fast Ethernet," said Paul Engle, general manager of HP's Fiber Optic Business Unit. "We see the support that end-customers are showing and the increasing shipments of equipment from system companies as a barometer for the Gigabit Ethernet market."

HP has been working closely with the leading system companies and switch-equipment suppliers on the physical-layer design of their Gigabit Ethernet systems and now is supporting these companies with high-volume supply as they move into commercial production.
