HP OpenView Agent Tester Toolkit Reduces Time to Market for Telecommunication-Management-Network Software Solutions; Customized Testing Capabilities Improve Quality, Dramatically Reduce Agent-software Development Cycle.

PALO ALTO Palo Alto, city, California
Palo Alto (păl`ō ăl`tō), city (1990 pop. 55,900), Santa Clara co., W Calif.; inc. 1894. Although primarily residential, Palo Alto has aerospace, electronics, and advanced research industries.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 28, 1996-- Hewlett-Packard Company today introduced the HP OpenView HP OpenView was a Hewlett Packard product range consisting of an extensive portfolio of network and systems management products. In 2007 the entire HP OpenView portfolio was rebranded under the strengthened HP Software name.  Agent Tester Toolkit to help telecommunication equipment and service providers bring products and services to market faster. The toolkit automatically creates a suite of tests and provides automated and interactive methods to send those tests to an agent. This automation means that telecommunication management network (TMN (Telecommunications Management Network) A set of international standards for network management from the ITU. It is used by large carriers such as Sprint, Verizon and AT&T. ) developers are able to completely test their agents without ever writing code.

"Developing solutions for the telecommunications market is a complex and difficult task in a highly competitive arena," said Olivier Helleboid, general manager of HP's OpenView Program. "The Agent Tester Toolkit addresses these business challenges by helping to reduce development costs, improving quality and shortening the development cycle. OpenView technology enables our customers to do their jobs more productively than ever before."

With today's announcement, HP extends the OpenView suite of telecom software-developer offerings to cover the complete development cycle. The Guidelines for the Definition of Managed Objects (GDMO (Guidelines for Definition of Managed Objects) The rules for defining the elements (objects) that are managed in a LAN (workstations, servers, switches, etc.). ) Modeling Toolkit, the Managed Object Toolkit (MOT) and the new Agent Tester Toolkit combine to enable developers to rapidly deploy effective and reliable management solutions.

Using the same object specifications created by the GDMO Modeling Toolkit, which is used by the MOT to generate a standards-based default agent, the Agent Tester Toolkit automatically generates tailored tests and provides the reporting necessary to develop agents. Through the use of interactive and regression tests, the Agent Tester Toolkit will fully exercise the agent during customization and testing. The interactive test method provides the ability to incrementally test the customization of the agent, while the regression-testing method allows for a complete suite of tests to be executed, with the results being verified against the expected results. This standards-based agent creation and testing capability allows developers to deploy the highest-quality TMN solutions quickly and efficiently.

The Agent Tester Toolkit is a fully integrated component of the HP OpenView family of TMN products and tools. The HP OpenView Distributed Management (DM) platform is the leading environment for building TMN solutions. The Agent Tester Toolkit uses OpenView DM runtime components for sending and receiving requests during agent development and testing. The Agent Tester Toolkit also integrates with the OpenView Developer Tools graphical user interface graphical user interface (GUI)

The HP OpenView Agent Tester Toolkit ensures consistency with the object-model specification by using the same GDMO object specification used to create the agent. The Agent Tester Toolkit also gives developers the flexibility to customize generated test programs, incorporating event-handling and response, error-handling and complex MIB (1) (Management Information Base) The hierarchical database used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP) to describe the particular device being monitored. MIB objects are identified using ASN.1 syntax. See SNMP, RMON, OID and ASN.1.  definitions.

In addition to the Agent Tester Toolkit, HP also announced that a new version of the Managed Object Toolkit, MOT 1.1, is scheduled to be available in January 1997. Enhancements added to MOT 1.1 include ease of use via a new GUI, higher-level programming through encapsulation (1) In object technology, the creation of self-contained modules that contain both the data and the processing.
