HP Offers First Compact Test Set for Installing and Maintaining 2.4-GB S SDH Transmission Systems.

GENEVA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 4, 1995--Hewlett Packard Company today introduces here at Telecom '95 the first one-box, portable test set for the installation, maintenance and monitoring of synchronous transmission module level-16 (STM-16) transmission backbones.

"STM-16 links form the backbone of an intercity or interregional network," said Chuck Acken, general manager of HP's Communications Measurements Division. "Because these networks link major regions or cities, any backbone failure needs to be corrected quickly. Deregulation and competition have caused service providers to look for cheaper, faster ways for their equipment manufacturers to do installation, and what we're offering is a field test set that's compact and easy to use."

The HP 37778A test set checks network operation and troubleshoots problems. It enables users to pinpoint which vendor's equipment has failed in a network comprised of technology from many different companies.

The introduction of the HP 37778A, HP's first STM-16 installation and maintenance product, extends HP's range of synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) installation and maintenance test sets to cover all plesiochronous digital hierarchy (PDH) and SDH rates up to STM-16. At STM-16, transmission equipment is far more complex than at lower rates. Nevertheless, fast, trouble-free installation is vital. With the HP 37778A, maintenance teams no longer face the inconvenience and costly trial of lugging lots of telecommunication test equipment cross-country to equipment sites. Now they can handcarry a single instrument, loaded with STM-1 and STM-16 test modules. The VXI-based STM-16 modules include SDH transport overhead, jitter test, and 1310-nm and 1550-nm optical interface modules. The STM-1 modules cover a broad range of PDH, SDH and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) applications.

Nonintrusive monitoring of live traffic and alarm detection can be performed simultaneously at the STM-1 and STM-16 levels, allowing operators to catch degradation early and maintain service quality.
