HP NetServer LS Shatters $300 tps-B Price/Performance Barrier In TPC-B Benchmark Results.

PALO ALTO Palo Alto, city, California
Palo Alto (păl`ō ăl`tō), city (1990 pop. 55,900), Santa Clara co., W Calif.; inc. 1894. Although primarily residential, Palo Alto has aerospace, electronics, and advanced research industries.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1995--Hewlett-Packard Company today announced that its recently introduced HP NetServer LS2 5/100 and 5/133 NetServer Series shattered the $300 per tpsB price/performance barrier and delivered record-level performance for x86-based servers in TPC-B An earlier benchmark that measured overall transaction processing performance. See TPC.  benchmark results.

The HP NetServer LS2 5/100 achieved an outstanding 371 transactions per second In a very generic sense, the term Transactions Per Second refers to the number of atomic actions performed by certain entity per second. In a more restrictied view, the term is usually used by DBMS vendor and user community to refer to the number of database transactions performed  (tpsB) at a cost of $286 per tpsB. The HP NetServer LS2 5/133 delivered an impressive 419 transactions per second at the low cost of $259 per tpsB.

"As with our other x86-based servers, the NetServer LS proves to be a solid, multiprocessing server delivering the high performance that is critical for today's demanding next-generation application server user," said James P. McDonnell, worldwide marketing manager of HP's Network Server Division.

The results are another example of the performance and price/performance delivered by HP servers. Consistently strong TPC (Transaction Processing Performance Council, San Francisco, CA, www.tpc.org) An organization devoted to benchmarking transaction processing systems. In order to derive the number of transactions that can be processed in a given time frame, TPC benchmarks measure the total performance of  results have helped HP earn the position of the largest and fastest-growing supplier of commercial servers in the industry. HP servers are used by customers in applications ranging from workgroup file servers to mainframe alternatives in large corporate datacenters.

Today's results were achieved with dual-processor configurations of the HP NetServer LS with 100MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  and 133MHz Pentium(tm) processors, respectively. TPC-B INDUSTRY-STANDARD DEFINITION

TPC-B is an industry-standard benchmark developed by the Transaction Processing Updating the appropriate database records as soon as a transaction (order, payment, etc.) is entered into the computer. It may also imply that confirmations are sent at the same time.

Transaction processing systems are the backbone of an organization because they update constantly.
Council (TPC). The TPC is an organization of computer-industry companies (including HP, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  and Oracle) that is chartered to develop benchmarks that allow customers to compare systems from different vendors.

The TPC-B benchmark tests a system's performance in a database environment. It uses a single, simple update-intensive transaction to exercise the basic components of a database system. It is not an on-line transaction processing (database) On-Line Transaction Processing - (OLTP) The processing of transactions by computers in real time.  benchmark as it does not test the entire range of OLTP (OnLine Transaction Processing) See transaction processing and OLCP.

OLTP - On-Line Transaction Processing
requirements, such as terminal and network I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

and multiple, complex transactions. To maintain the integrity of the benchmark, the TPC requires that vendors submitting results have their results audited by an independent agency to verify their validity. The TPC-B benchmark produces two results, one performance and one price/performance that can be used to compare systems from different vendors. Performance is measured in transactions per second (tpsB), while price/performance is measured as the five year cost of ownership per tpsB, or $/tpsB.

AVAILABILITY OF AUDITED RESULTS

The HP NetServer LS TPC-B tests were audited by Performance Metrics Performance metrics are measures of an organizations activities and performance. Performance metrics should support a range of stakeholder needs from customers, shareholders to employees [1]. , Inc. to ensure compliance to TPC requirements. A full-disclosure report describing HP's results in detail has been filed with the Transaction Processing Council. A copy of the report is available from the TPC for a nominal fee or can be obtained from HP by contacting Hewlett-Packard Company, Network Server Division, Attn: Performance Engineering, 5301 Stevens Creek Stevens Creek is a creek in Santa Clara County, California.
