HP Launches Family of Pulse/Data Generators; New HP 81100 Family Offers Engineers Flexibility and Performance for Characterizing Digital Designs.

PALO ALTO Palo Alto, city, California
Palo Alto (păl`ō ăl`tō), city (1990 pop. 55,900), Santa Clara co., W Calif.; inc. 1894. Although primarily residential, Palo Alto has aerospace, electronics, and advanced research industries.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 1, 1998--Hewlett-Packard Company today introduces the HP 81100 family of pulse/data generators. Design and test engineers, primarily in the semiconductor, computer and communications industries communications industry, broadly defined, the business of conveying information. Although communication by means of symbols and gestures dates to the beginning of human history, the term generally refers to mass communications. , now can verify their digital products and electrical components with a pulse/data generator specific to their needs.

The HP 81100 family, with performance levels from 80MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  to 330MHz, and with levels of 50MHz and 660MHz expected to be added later this year, generates one- or two-channel digital waveforms necessary to test today's digital designs.

With the HP 81100 family, design engineers can save money by choosing a pulse/data generator with the functionality and performance needed for a particular testing application. Four models are available, each with a different frequency range. For less demanding applications, such as creating a signal for testing a radar station, the HP 81100 family now provides a solution at half the cost of former HP pulse/datagenerators. The HP 81100 family also meets the demands of more complex digital tests, such as IC verification or clock testing of microprocessors, which require precise timing and a frequency of 500MHz.

"In digital design and electrical-component testing, engineers are faced with the challenge of getting products to market more quickly; tight budgets and the growing use of higher testing speeds are adding to this challenge," said Alois Hauk, general manager of HP's Boeblingen Verification Solutions operation. "Our new family of pulse/data generators helps engineers get their designs into manufacturing as quickly as possible and develop better products, faster."

The HP 81100 family of pulse/data generators provides all standard pulses, digital patterns, sequenced and looped data and multilevel mul·ti·lev·el

waveforms required for testing the digital and analog functionality of designs. Glitch-free change of timing -- for example, phased locked loop (PLL PLL - phase-locked loop ) tests -- enables the user to perform a greater range of measurements more easily. Fixed delay between trigger in and signal out allows timing synchronization (1) See synchronous and synchronous transmission.

(2) Ensuring that two sets of data are always the same. See data synchronization.

(3) Keeping time-of-day clocks in two devices set to the same time. See NTP.

Common operation across the entire HP 81100 family saves time when engineers use different models. All models feature the same operation for functions, which the user can program through the HP-IB HP-IB - IEEE 488  or front panel. Based on the familiar HP 8110A, the user interface is easy to use and features a graphical display showing all the parameters at a glance.

Furthermore, the HP 81100 family of pulse/data generators can be cost-effectively integrated into automated au·to·mate
