HP Delivers Unsurpassed Performance in New Stackable Switching Hubs; Provides New Levels of Flexibility and Scaleability at Low 10Base-T Prices.

PALO ALTO Palo Alto, city, California
Palo Alto (păl`ō ăl`tō), city (1990 pop. 55,900), Santa Clara co., W Calif.; inc. 1894. Although primarily residential, Palo Alto has aerospace, electronics, and advanced research industries.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 26, 1996-- Hewlett-Packard Company, the leader in networked systems for workgroups, today announced three new switching hubs A device that acts as a central switch or PBX, connecting one line to another. In a local area network (LAN), a switching hub gives any two stations on the network the full bandwidth of the line.  and a switch module that provide industry-leading manageability, availability and performance at prices up to 30 percent lower than the competition.

HP's AdvanceStack 10Base-T Switching Hubs are designed for workgroups and remote offices with diverse and growing application needs. They provide the greatest level of flexibility in the industry, unsurpassed performance in enabling new applications and file sharing Copying files from one computer to another. See peer-to-peer network, file sharing protocol and file and printer sharing.  and the simplest migration path to switching within a 10Mbps hub framework at low 10Mbps prices.

"HP is offering the broadest range of high-performance solutions in the industry," said Gary McAnally, general manager for HP's Workgroup Networks Division (Roseville, Calif.). "These new switching hubs will make the lives of our customers easier by reducing the cost and complexity of building, growing and maintaining workgroups."

"HP is taking a very pragmatic approach to the real needs found in small to midsize workgroups by offering the advantages of segmentation while retaining the price point of standard ethernet," said Trudy Barker, director and principal analyst for Dataquest.

HP ADVANCESTACK SWITCHING HUB BASE MODELS

HP's new switching hub base models -- the AdvanceStack Switching Hub-12R, AdvanceStack Switching Hub-24R and AdvanceStack Switching Hub-24T -- function as cost-effective, unmanaged shared 10Base-T hubs. They provide easy migration from simple plug-and-play networking to advanced high-performance networking via expansion slots A receptacle inside a computer or other electronic system that accepts a printed circuit board. The number of slots determines future expansion. See PC data buses.

(hardware) expansion slot - A connector in a computer into which an expansion card can be plugged.
. Two expansion slots allow end-users to add the AdvanceStack Management Pack and AdvanceStack 10Base-T Switch Module for additional functionality when needed. HP's new switching hubs are designed to grow with the needs of the end-user for investment protection.

HP ADVANCESTACK SWITCHING HUBS WITH SWITCH MODULE AND MANAGEMENT PACK

HP's AdvanceStack 10Base-T Switching Hubs, with management and switch modules, surpass 10Base-T competition with new features such as segmentation for performance boost; port switching for flexibility; auto-configuration and load balancing The fine tuning of a computer system, network or disk subsystem in order to more evenly distribute the data and/or processing across available resources. For example, in clustering, load balancing might distribute the incoming transactions evenly to all servers, or it might redirect them  for easy and automatic stack configuration; and RMON (Remote MONitoring) Enhancements to the management information base (MIB) structure used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP). In 1991, RMON added comprehensive network monitoring capabilities.  support -- all at 10Mbps prices.

Users can plug HP's AdvanceStack 10Base-T Switch Module and Management Pack into an HP switching hub and watch the stack become fully switched -- automatically. The module has eight ports, four of which are internal ports that connect to the four segments within the hub architecture -- without the need to cable from port to port -- and four of which are external ports that connect to servers to create four parallel paths for optimal stack performance.

HP's new Switching Hubs have the ability to segment into four separate fully managed LAN segments A section of a local area network that is used by a particular workgroup or department and separated from the rest of the LAN by a bridge, router or switch. Networks are divided into multiple segments for security and to improve traffic flow by filtering out packets that are not destined  that offer complete flexibility for ports per segment -- segments as small as one port are possible. Each segment becomes an independent 10Mbps collision domain A group of nodes in an Ethernet network that compete with each other for access. If two or more devices try to access the network at the exact same time, a collision will occur. A collision domain is typically confined to a subnet.  shared by fewer users and network devices. Segmentation boosts network performance by providing more bandwidth for each user, which results in fewer collisions per segment. HP's AdvanceStack Switching Hubs are scaleable from 10Mbps hubs to 40Mbps higher-performance switching hubs.

The port-switching functionality of HP AdvanceStack Switching Hubs allows ports to be moved across segments to optimize performance with the AdvanceStack Management Pack. End-users can, via software, move any hub port onto any hub or stack segment for maximum network flexibility, without going into the wiring closet The central distribution or servicing point for cables in a network. See MDF and wire center.  to make adds, moves or changes.

For an added performance boost, the end-user can push the load balancing button located in the Management Pack software to redistribute re·dis·trib·ute

HP ADVANCESTACK MANAGEMENT PACK

Only HP offers switching hubs with a complete management solution. The HP AdvanceStack 10Base-T Management Pack provides advanced management functionality, including SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. , RMON, HP EASE, easy drag-and-drop port switching and traffic monitoring and optimization. It includes the AdvanceStack Management Module and new AdvanceStack Assistant application -- announced separately today. AdvanceStack Assistant now comes with all AdvanceStack switches and network-management hardware as a complete network-management solution.

The AdvanceStack 10Base-T Management Pack monitors traffic patterns and recommends easy drag-and-drop moves to further optimize performance over time. Adds, moves and changes are made easy by intuitive drag-and-drop software that allows end-users to create virtual segments. The AdvanceStack 10Base-T Management Pack is required to use the segmentation feature.

The Management Module inserts into its own slot on the hub face to fully manage all four LAN segments within a stack backbone of up to 200 users. RMON is supported on all segments.

U.S. PRICE, AVAILABILITY AND WARRANTY

The HP AdvanceStack Switching Hubs are expected to be available Nov. 1 though HP's worldwide network of authorized computer dealers, resellers and distributors. HP AdvanceStack Switching Hubs offer a limited lifetime warranty with the first five years on-site.
