PALO ALTO Palo Alto, city, California
Palo Alto (păl`ō ăl`tō), city (1990 pop. 55,900), Santa Clara co., W Calif.; inc. 1894. Although primarily residential, Palo Alto has aerospace, electronics, and advanced research industries.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 11, 1996 -- Hewlett-Packard Company, the leader in networked systems for workgroups, today announced three new, low-cost, entry-level 10Base-T hubs; a new SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. (1) management module; and two hubs bundled with the SNMP management module. The six new products are designed for a small or remote office workgroup.

The AdvanceStack Hub-8E is HP's entry-level unmanaged hub A network hub that does not support management queries or commands. Typically an Ethernet hub, it serves as a central connecting point only. Contrast with managed hub. . Priced at $199, it offers a low-cost, simple network solution for small workgroups.

SNMP management is now available in new versions of the AdvanceStack Hub-8U and the AdvanceStack Hub-16U for customers who need inexpensive, reliable and manageable solutions. The AdvanceStack 8U/16U SNMP Module is a cost-effective management module for HP's Hub-8U and Hub-16U.

"Our new 10Base-T products will make HP the solution of choice for entry-level network installations," said Gary McAnally, general manager of HP's Roseville (Calif.) Networks Division. "We've got the distribution channels and low-cost production to allow us to offer competitively priced network solutions in what many consider a commodity market."

o AdvanceStack Hub-8E -- HP's AdvanceStack Hub-8E

provides connectivity to Ethernet devices in the small

workgroup. It has eight RJ-45 ports and one BNC (hardware) BNC - A connector for coaxial cable such as that used for some video connections and RG58 "cheapernet" connections. A BNC connector has a bayonet-type shell with two small knobs on the female connector which lock into spiral slots in the male connector when it is twisted  port

in a small footprint. Its "plug and forget"

installation and exceptional reliability make it the

ideal solution for first-time network installations.

The Hub-8E can be daisy-chained to additional hubs as

the network grows.

o AdvanceStack Hub-8U and AdvanceStack Hub-16U -- The new

AdvanceStack Hub-8U and AdvanceStack Hub-16U are

entry-level hubs that can be upgraded to full SNMP

management with the AdvanceStack 8U/16U SNMP Module.

The Hub-8U and Hub-16U offer flexibility to upgrade

when more functionality is required. A transceiver (TRANSmitter reCEIVER) An electronic device or circuit that transmits and receives analog or digital signals. It comes in many forms; for example, a transponder on a satellite, a network adapter in the computer or the circuits in a cellphone.

or Fiber Optic.

o AdvanceStack 8U/16U SNMP Module -- The AdvanceStack

8U/16U SNMP Module provides SNMP management for the new

AdvanceStack Hub-8U and AdvanceStack Hub-16U. Its

full-featured SNMP agent (networking) SNMP agent - A software process that responds to queries using the Simple Network Management Protocol to provide status and statistics about a network node.  offers a complete solution for

the small or remote office that needs either local or

remote management. With the AdvanceStack 8U/16U SNMP

Module installed, the Hub-8U and Hub-16U can be managed

remotely through a dial-in external modem A self-contained modem that is connected via cable to the serial port of a computer. It draws power from a wall outlet. The advantage of an external modem is that a series of status lights on the outside of the case display the changing states of the modem (off-hook, carrier detect,  or Telnet.

When combined with HP's industry-leading management

software programs, OpenView and Interconnect Manager,

it provides a comprehensive management solution from

device management to advanced traffic monitoring.

o AdvanceStack Hub-8U and Hub-16U Bundles -- The

AdvanceStack Hub-8U with SNMP and the AdvanceStack

Hub-16U with SNMP are bundles that combine the

flexibility of the Hub-8U and Hub-16U with the power of

the 8U/16U SNMP Module to provide an economical and

manageable solution for small or remote workgroups.

They cost less than purchasing either the Hub-8U or

Hub-16U and the SNMP Module separately.
